[Toronto] Sushi Momo

I’d spoken earlier about getting a gift certificate for this restaurant and my partner not liking Japanese food. Then I couldn’t make it there for health reasons so, feeling somewhat better, I invited my niece.

Sushi Momo apparently has a Montreal location and landed in Toronto a couple years ago. It’s 100% vegan. I like/actually prefer vegetarian sushi so I was OK with the concept.

It’s a nice, bright space with a kitchen behind a glass window. When I arrived they were busy filling bags for deliverers so I waited to be seated for my 90-minute window.

We took a while to decide what we wanted and settled on the Wednesday special tasting menu for one matched with three other dishes. We shared everything. The tasting menu started with a miso soup with lots of tofu and an unusual flavour. Not bad. This was followed by a mushroom tartare and crispy breads. Pleasant and mushroomy with truffle oil. There were two each of four types of maki, no longer remember what they were but it was chef’s choice. Our a la carte opportune were soba salad (a noodle with veg and peanut sauce) “beef wellington” and Melitzana (sun-dried tomato, eggplant, “cheese” panko. The best dish was the chocolate mousse - a dense vegan chocolate concoction with sliced strawberries.

There was a mad dash at the end. I needed to catch a cab say an alloted hour and, despite giving them plenty of warning, I ended up rushing out leaving my niece to pay what was left over from the gift certificate. The meal was pretty close to the $100 I had been gifted. No drinks.

To tell the truth, I had a stomach ache that day but kept the reservation. I couldn’t eat much but boxed up most of it. What I did eat seemed a bit heavy on vinegar and a bit samey - lots of Maki even when not described as such. I would’ve preferred some of the fresher, less innovative, vegetarian Maki I’ve had elsewhere.

The next day I ate the boxed Maki for lunch and it was acceptable. Not wonderful but then I’m not vegan and it might have been wasted on me. Anyone else been there?
