[Toronto] [Ontario] Welcome to any new Canadian posters

Hi everyone, still getting used to HO and its set of bells and whistles. My name hasn’t changed too much from Chowhound - different rules about punctuation and spaces. Glad to see so many familiar names and looking forward to getting to know others.

Here from Chowhound!

Welcome @SNACKeR!

@SNACKeR, re: Canada Board

I’ll respond to your comment here, rather than on CH.

If we, as Ontarians, get enough traffic going, we will be able to have the technical team create an Ontario and/or Toronto board.

I think Ontario Board to start makes more sense. When you wrote about a specific place, you should include the city name in square brackets in the subject line, to help with the search results.

If you’re writing about a specific shop, restaurant, bakery , etc, you can enter the location of the business into the post, as well.

We have at least 3 Ottawa Members, as well as members in Eastern Ontario, southwestern Ontario, in addition to the GTA.

I know we have a few members from Quebec, BC, Manitoba and Alberta. I’m not sure if we have any members from the Maritimes, or up North, yet.

Most Canadian posts previous to this week were trip planning posts visiting BC and AB, or CaptCrunch’s Mtl posts from 2015.

. This welcome thread is to connect all the Canadian residents. When you post threads going forward, keep the location in the subject line.

The search on this site works really well.

Quebec City

Vancouver Island

No dedicated threads for Saskatchewan, Manitoba, PEI, NB, NS, NFLD, Nunavut,
NW Territories or the Yukon yet.

Hope you enjoy HO.

Hi @Christie! Nice to have some Albertans taking part!!
I’m hoping to visit Alberta this fall!

This is a trip report from my last vacation! I haven’t been on a plane or outside Ontario since my trip to Jasper! [Alberta, Jasper] trip report from Jasper

Canadian residents, Canadian expats and visitors to Canada, and anyone else.

I’m not sure which posters in the which regions will end up being most prolific on a regional Canadian boards.

For the time being, how do you feel about asking for 3 regional boards:

Toronto and the Greater Toronto area

Everywhere else in Ontario [tag Ottawa, southwestern Ontario, NOTL, Muskoka, PEC, etc when you post )

Everywhere else in Canada (Tag [Western Provinces], [Montreal] when you post)

Or, tongue-planted-in-cheek, we could ask for these 2 regional boards:

Toronto AKA The Centre of the Universe Board

Everywhere else in Canada Board (tag Montreal, Vancouver , Ottawa etc in the subject line)

I haven’t seen many regional posts about dining outside the GTA. There are several reports re: Canadian locations each year, but not enough traffic for other regional Canadian boards yet, so it doesn’t make sense to change the architecture until we have the posts to fill the Boards.

I’d prefer an Ontario board, knowing that most posts will be Toronto-centric. Perhaps posters can indicate or tag their specific location. That said, I don’t think I have ever posted a dining thread, and only rarely a geo-specific one (store, market, local produce) so maybe others who do can chime in.

Thanks for your comments @pavlova :slightly_smiling_face:

What’s interesting, is that over the past 7 years, most regional dining posts on HO have been in Vancouver /Vancouver Island, and Montreal, because American HO travellers were posting about their visits.

I was posting about restaurants on CH, on FB, on IG, so I was using HO for home cooking mostly.

I think the admin will be able to help us set up an Ontario Board. Depending on where and what the posters post, maybe we will have a Toronto Board and an Outside Toronto but still in Ontario Board.

Here are the current boards. I think a Toronto/ Greater Toronto Board, and a separate Board for everywhere else in Canada would work until there are more regional posts.

I certainly see the logic behind GTA being its own region. But “everywhere else” isn’t very regional. Maybe one for western province and one for Eastern provinces would be a better fit.

I used to post about Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Edmonton, and occasionally Winnipeg, on CH, and the Prairie Boards didn’t get much traffic. It still made sense to have them together.

I was probably the most prolific poster in Saskatchewan over the 19 years I posted lol. CHs in Calgary and Edmonton gave up after a while.

If you decide to post about local spots, be sure to use [Alberta] and the town or city in the subject line.

It’s sort of moot until we see more regional dining posts. That said,

Greater Toronto Area/ Golden Horseshoe (Oshawa to Hamilton)

Is how I would group the regional boards, if traffic wasn’t an issue.

Similar to how NYC is separate from
NY State.

Just chiming in here to say hi. I came from eGullet >> Chowhound >> Hungry Onion. Looking forward to interesting food & wine conversations here. :wine_glass:

Agree would be good to have a Toronto/Ontario sub-forum.

I signed up and posted for a bit here and then got distracted by life etc. Thought I’d have a boo again prompted by the imminent closure of CH where once upon a time I was a regular poster (mostly Vancouver, SF Bay Area and Portland. Greetings all!
