To Improve How He Ate, Our Critic Looked at What He Drank

As someone who gave up soda seemingly a million years ago — save for the occasional & usually shared bottle of Mexicoke, I’m not too worried about sugary drinks impacting my health. I add such a minuscule amount of Splenda to my cuppa that one lil pack lasts multiple days, and I’ve never been someone who can’t stop after 1-2 alcoholic beverages.

I like the suggestions of aqua fresca for those who need sweet drinks with their meals. One of my favorite drinks with food, of course, remains carbonated water — no flavoring required.

In the summer, especially in Berlin while enjoying Turkish foods, ayran is my choice of beverage: refreshing, tart, salty.

I don’t drink booze at all, so that’s never been an issue. As a still somewhat picky eater, I am, maybe, fortunate in that the only soda I actually like and will drink with any regularity is cola. As a teenager and young adult I had a 2-3 can per day habit. My cardiac issues led my doctors to get on my case about cutting it down or at least switching to caffine-free, which I did for many years. The pandemic meant that many brands reduced the varieties of product due to supply- and packaging-chain issues. Caffine Free (but NOT sugar free) Coke was one of those casualties. I’ve tried both aspertame (Diet Coke) and Splenda/Stevia (Coke Zero) varieties and and deeply dislike them. That shortage meant I (finally) was able to drastically reduce my soda consumption. I will do 2 or 3 a week now, which has proved advantageous for both my heart palpitations and my waistline.

I’ve never been one for unsweet fizzy water. My placeholder has been a countertop “pebble” ice maker (the “good ice” like they have at Sonic). That new ice has also meant I’m no longer cracking a crown every year or so from chewing on regular ice cubes.

It’s a European thing. We extra

I used to enjoy diet Dr. Pepper & still think it’s one of the “better” diet sodas, but I have it so rarely I’m always shocked how sweet the stuff is. Diet Pepsi > diet coke.

But generally, I’m fine with plain, cold, fizzy water. I drink a gallon or more of the stuff on the daily. Hydration is important.
