Time Out Market Boston

Awful news. Here’s a non-paywall version: https://archive.ph/XSIVd

Good luck with the deadline! And I’ve said awful news but you’re really not missing much having not tried Time Out. It’s not quite a destination, but I’m definitely going to miss it when I go to a game or have an appointment in the area. It fills a very specific hole around there.

It is awful news, especially for the vendors, who were given disgracefully short notice. Pre-pandemic I really loved the offerings there. (Since, of course, I no longer live in the area.)

That’s bad news. We’ve been there often, and although they partially blame the pandemic for the closure – but it’s clearly greed – we actually met people there precisely because it offered wider confines (and a wider variety of food) than a traditional restaurant.

I’ve visited probably a dozen times since the pandemic, and while it’s not always packed (but sometimes is), I’ve never seen it especially empty either. So I certainly don’t believe the pandemic has anything to do with this…and after five years, feels like it’s time for a new excuse???

BTW I’ve said it before on other threads but especially in light of Time Out closing potentially due to low attendance, I’m really worried about High Street Place. I visited this last weekend, Saturday evening around 6:00. Enjoyed a wonderful glass of wine at Bubble Bath. And just like all of my prior visits, the place was nearly empty – way more vacant than I’ve ever seen Time Out. I really hope they’re killing it with weekday lunch traffic; I will be very sad if it’s the next one to go.

Admittedly haven’t been there in a bit, but this was a convenient spot in the area. Lost some of its allure for me when Michael Schlow’s storefront closed in there and I could no longer get their rendition of the legendary Via Matta bolognese.

High Street Place feels a bit claustrophobic to me for some reason. There are people in there at lunch time, but it has not been jammed the few times I have been in at that time.

I’m sad to hear this news too, especially since I just recommended Ms Clucks to another HO’er. It’s been busy to moderately busy when I’ve gone - usually on Saturday late afternoons or evenings. The only thing I felt was annoying about the set up was that not all the eateries were open and had different hours. If this were one place of 30, I suppose I wouldn’t mind as much, but there are may 15 total, if even that? If I wanted a beverage, the only places might be the two bars at the end or going for a throwaway soda at the food stall, because the one place that does non-alcoholic beverages is closed.

The food of the eateries themselves ranged from good to really good. I have heard about really high rents at these places and that certainly doesn’t help with the food costs, or help entice more tenants.

That was a drawback for me, too.

My SO and I visted quite a few times, and it is close enough to Longwood Medical Area that I met colleagues there for lunch several times. I am/was a big fan of Gogo Ya, and the bar is/was decent for that sort of place. I think it’s a loss.

Sooooo…just saw a FB post from Phantom Gourmet (pushed at me - I don’t follow them) claiming they’re taking over the Time Out Market in Boston.

“…all-star lineup of beloved Boston and New England brands, including Wahlburgers, Harrows, Kowloon, Newbridge Cafe, Galleria Umberto, and Abe & Louie’s Cheesesteaks,”

“…the bar will host celebrity bartenders such as Tad Bonvie, Ernie Boch Jr., and Jim Sokolove, delivering unexpected star power and personality to the guest experience.”

If only. But in reading comments on the FB link, there are so many people who like PG. So maybe their lowest common denominator style will work. :expressionless: :woman_shrugging:

Sad commentary.

Years ago - like 20?! - we went to one of their functions and it’s just like the emperor has no clothes.

Well according to Reddit this was a AI-generated rage bait. And a local news station fell for it too

I knew it couldn’t be true.

Over the last year or so many disturbing things I’d have previously said couldn’t possibly happen, have become reality. So at this point my brain is in full cynic mode: I feel like any and all forms of enshittification are possible, and even more likely than not to occur. Phantom Gourmet food hall featuring Kowloon’s delicacies and various of their politically-aligned buds as guest bartenders would have been a perfect entry note for 2026. But worry not; I’m sure whatever actually happens will be even worse

I saw that too and felt it was way too fast to have made any sort of deals or agreements, so suspected it might not be real. There are supposed to be at least 2 more food halls coming (or maybe some came, and I forgot?). I do like well done food halls aka fancy food courts. As long as there is enough foot traffic through out the week to sustain them, and they can keep their menus simple, I hope they can last. I would be ok if PG took over that one and made it their Nacho, home made Pizza roll food fest that kept all of their audience and purveyors to that one location. Leave the other food halls to those of us who want to explore something besides nachos and chicken parm.

And this is why I hate AI. BUT…why is it still on PG’s FB page?
