Time Out Magazine’s The 18 Best Pizzas on the Planet Right Now

Thoughts?

The Top 18 Pizzas according to Time Out Writers:

Their Number 1 pizza:

I’m trying to wrap my head around Civerinos (Edinburgh) being on this list. It’s good but maybe it’s much better? (I mean really. no complaints and I loved having what I considered a more NYC slice, but did I think “best pizza on the planet?”…Not that I recall.)

Lists like these are meaningless when they are compiled by several different writers, each of whom have only sampled one pizzeria.

It’s like asking 5 different people to ordinally rank the best ice cream flavor when each of them have only tasted 1 out of 5 flavors in contention.

Chocolate.

There.

Lists like this are meant to garner clicks, not even fighting words – because in the case of pizza, “good”, let alone “best” is a very local matter.

The smaller the market for the opinions collected and brayed, the more valid the judgment – we know a household that keeps a (one) pet, and from time to time one of the owners calls it the “worst dog in the house”, while another of the owners calls it the “best dog living here”. Our take: everyone’s right about the family’s dog.

Growing up in NYC, the “best” pizza was the one closest to your house, fresh out of the oven. I still think that holds true.

I think that is definitely a list.

From Mad Magazine:

A NY city streetscape.
First shop is a pizza place with a sign reading “Best pizza on the East Side.”

Next door is also a pizza place: “Best Pizza in the City.”

Next one over: “Best Pizza in the US.”

After that, “Best Pizza in the World”

Last one: “Best Pizza on the Block.”

My only thought is, I’d like some pizza.

“You did it!!! Congratulations!!!”

same lol

Yeah, it seems they just asked editors for their best or favorite pizza in that one location, even if their example may not be the 500th best in comparison to a random spot in Italy.

I know this is subject, but some of these just don’t look good. And some of these are bordering on some new flatbread creation, at that point you need to be considering things like flamenkuchen and pide/katchapuri, which in their best executed forms can be excellent, but are no longer pizza.

I thought the majority of them weren’t particularly appealing.

No accounting for taste, of course.

The majority of them are at least mildly appealing to me but a few are somewhat revolting. #8: What’s going on with that weird cheese? #10: I’m all for leopard spotting but that just looks dry and burnt. #18: WTAF even is that??!?! Honorable mention, #11: Avocado and pizza, both things I love. I have zero interest in bringing them together.

Yeah, I really don’t care for hot or even warm avocado. As for the list:

#1 That is too much cheese on one pizza.
#2 No thx to HBEs on my π, either, tank you berry much.
#3 I’d hit that. Like, harrrd.
#4 My kinda pie. Simple, quality ingredients. Plus I’m a Neapolitan crust gal all the way.
#5 Too much stuff. Seems like it would be hella salty.
#6 GTFO with the hot honey already
#7 Looks good.
#8 No idea what’s on this :woman_shrugging:t2:
#9 Meh.
#10 I’'d try it.
#11 Maybe without the avocado.
#12 Don’t like deep dish pizza casserole.
#13 I love nduja & blue cheese, but never had the latter on a pizza. I guess I’d TOFTT
#14 Looks good.
#15 Sure. I like shrooms on apizz.
#16 Nope.
#17 Mabez. I’m not too fond of white πs.
#18 Too much f’n stuff.

These are the vibes I relate to lol

I would try raw avocado added after on top of a hot Neapolitan-type pizza, in the same way I would add raw arugula or prosciutto crudo to a pizza

I like both of those things on pizza, but they add something: Arugula adds some texture and bitterness to counteract the fattiness of the cheese. Prosciutto adds porkiness, a bit of salty punch, etc. Avocado adds … fatty creaminess? On top of fatty/creamy cheese? Just my take. LMK if you try it and it’s something I need to do and I’ll give it a go!

I found my steak frites at Bagatelle in 2008 ho hum.

I still would try their avocado pizza in Tulum or Cabo. LOL

it’s not a tomato mozzarella type pizza, as you can see!

There’s also a posh one with caviar at the Bagatelle in Miami

I would also eat this type

I’d try that too, if you’re buying. ($290, according to google, and $845 for the caviar one!)

…but in any case: It’s not pizza
