It was the best I’ve had, if I recall correctly. I lament not being able to eat as I used to, despite now trying to actively GAIN weight.

I ordered the caldo verde, arugula pear blue cheese salad and seafood rice.

I loved the salad and seafood risotto. It was Portugese seafood rice - which I was what I was hoping it would be, rather than a Portuguese take on Italian risotto. Spicy, with lots of peri peri, some cilantro, clams, calamari, 2 types of shrimp, mussels and oysters.

The caldo verde was a different style than I make or usually order, thickened. I probably wouldn’t order that again.

The photos aren’t great, as I had take-out and ate it on Royal Chinet, so I won’t post them.

You can make it at those prices but often spending a bit more on higher quality ingredients (and many restaurants do it) can give you much better tasting dishes, e.g. you can get beans for $.65 but if you use some heirloom beans for example from Rancho Gordo the flavors are so much better, same with the source of your pork belly etc.

Also, substitutions might end up with a delicious dish, but that delicious dish might not really be a French-style Cassoulet.

Beanies and weenies are also baked beans with meat, related to cassoulet but not cassoulet. :joy:

I prefer some of the baked/ braised beans with meat from other parts of Europe (Portugal, Italy, Spain, Poland) and South America (Brazilian feijoada) to most classic cassoulets.

What makes it Cassoulet for me are the tarbais beans, the French style sausages, the duck, the French herbs.

What Chantecler restaurant served as breakfast Cassoulet was French-style in taste, but the beans were just one small part of the breakfast. It was more like a full breakfast with a half cup of French - cassoulet -style beans. I would have thought a Breakfast Cassoulet would be a generous 1 to 1.5 cup serving of beans with duck, sausage and pork, with a fried egg on top . :joy:

If adult beverages are offered: Deep fried pickles; Battered mushrooms; and Broccoli cheese bites.

I’ve actually not had deep- fried pickles!

Point well-taken; and there si a difference among beans. Pork belly, I get pretty good. Our local pork is excellent. I just don’t have the freezer space, nor mouths to feed to buy a half a pig. Stll, the $10 difference I doubt would be covered by beans and pork belly.

Think of the dish as diner-style tempura.

I would go for Sunday brunch with a few friends and share 4 or 5 brunch mains, family style at the table- the pretzel board, the Croque Monsieur, breakfast tacos, the chilaquiles, the Kentucky hot brown.:rofl:

If I went for lunch or dinner, I’d choose the ropa vieja, birria ramen, French dip or burger.

Yup. Great fried pickles, Mexican street corn, brisket grilled cheese, burger… plus one of my gal pals is tending bar.

Their Banoffee pie is out of this world :drooling_face:

Curious, what kind of cheese was on that brisket grilled cheese.
