The Sweet Makers

Fans of baking shows and period BBC pieces will enjoy the Sweet Makers on BBC. It’s A 3 part series with four modern British pastry chefs. Looks like a lot of fun, re-creating historical confections recipes with era-appropriate equipment.

That’s a more refreshing idea for a current cooking related show. What sort of historical confections have they been making?

They had to break up loaf sugar then clarify it, made some thin wafers with cast iron presses over fire, marzipan, marmalade-stuffed candied oranges, candied roses, hard candies & pulled sugar, ice cream the old fashioned way then molded in tin molds, some sugar panning (coating with many layers).

Sort of an interesting history of sugar in Britain, plus makes you appreciate thermometers and electric appliances.
