“Within two weeks, sales at Bench’s bakery soared by 2,000%.”

Sliced bread was definitely one of the best 20th century inventions. Along with air conditioning.

I have to admit that I don’t understand why people buy sliced bread - it makes bread stale much faster and it’s easy to slice yourself

Not if you’re me–I always slice things kind of on the wonky side. My wife always complains about my ragged slices.

True. When I’m buying a loaf of crusty sourdough or a baguette, I buy it whole and slice as I need it. But for what I call “sandwich bread” or “toast bread”, having pre-sliced bread is easier. Plus, as @StephanieL StephanieL said - my slices can be wonky and uneven. Having uniform slices makes more sense for me. Thankfully, breads can be found both ways to satisfy all shoppers.

Air conditioning is a big yes!
Second most important?
Norman Borlaug’s crop yield increase techniques or traffic stop lights?
One saved hundreds of millions of lives from starvation and the other allowed driving at a reasonable pace in the modern American city.
Such a tough choice.
LOL!

Without AC, the modern South would not exist. Good or bad, you make the call.
