The Simple Fare, Millburn NJ

If you know anything about me, it’s that I love Indian food and have none close by (Aarzu is 30 mins away). I get up to NNJ 4-5 times a year for doctor’s appointments (I used to live up there) and am often looking for lunch on my way home. For months, I’ve been trying to get to The Simple Fare in Millburn, but one thing and another kept me from there (including the AWFUL traffic in that town after 2pm during the school year). TODAY WAS THE DAY, and all I can say is I can’t wait to get back!

Billed as an Indian Cafe/Patisserie, The Simple Fare is open for breakfast and lunch. Their coffee (I had it iced) was exceptional and a sign in the shop makes it clear that they’re sourcing good ingredients and that EVERYTHING is made in-house. I had the Aloo Masala Unde Roll - a flaky paratha with a layer of egg, aloo (potato) masala, mint-cilantro chutney, onion, and spices. Since it was pushing 3pm I wanted to get on the GSP, so I got it to go and warmed it up in the oven when I got home. DEEEEEEEElicious! Just enough spice in the chutney and the perfect amount of filling. I also got 4 (that’s how they sell them) Nankhatai cookies. They make 3 flavors: rose water, pistachio, and cardamom. Since I don’t care for rose water anything, I got 2 each of the others. These were new to me - think Mexican wedding cookie in size and texture - maybe even a little crunchier. It’s possible I tried one while waiting for my Kati Roll.

I did my best to convince the woman at the counter that they NEED to open one in Asbury Park, because it would be a huge hit.

If you’re in or near Millburn, I highly recommend you check it out! They have a huge lovely-looking patio (just not in today’s heat) and their own parking lot. The address is on Main but the entrance and parking are off of Essex Street.

Here’s the menu

There’ll be one in Jersey City next year as well!

Yes, but… Millburn is closer!

What’s a “pastrami Joe” composed of besides the pastrami?

Looks to be a sloppy Joe made with pastrami

Thinly sliced dense rye bread, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and pastrami, or ham, or roast beef, etc. I’ve probably eaten over 500 Millburn deli joes in my life.
