The Mediterranean Diet is a Whitewashed Fantasy

actually, it’s hilarious!
choose Cobb salad for entree
choose a side salad . . . uproarous results.

neat idea, something on the order of 400,000x more choices needed, including “None”

Agree, maybe it’s a beta version or they just didn’t have much time to load it with more stuff.

But I was happy to see they didn’t pretend no one drinks water when eating out. I recognize that a lot of people get drinks or sodas as kind of a treat, if they feel like they’re treating themselves by eating out. But we always just get water. Most of my old workmates that I still meet for lunch every so often also normally just order water or, one guy, unsweetened tea.

I was watching a tv program this week that featured a village on the Cilento Coast, which is south of the Amalfi and far less touristed. I then found out it was the region where Ancel Keys lived and worked for half the year (in Pioppi). Interestingly enough, the traditional cuisine of the area (no doubt related to poverty) was high on vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, oil oil and a bit or red wine and meat. In more recent decades, white bread has replaced the traditional whole grains and meat consumption has grown. Interesting that this area has been extensively studied due to the longevity of the population – looking at all factors: diet, altitude, social factors, species of food sources, genetics and water sources .

Going back to bbqboy’s post — I find the post a bit off the mark to be complaining about the inclusion of tomatoes (and other foodstuffs) that have been integrated into certain diets for over 500 years. No one takes the pains to criticize the Okinawa diet just because the purple potato was originally important from the Americas. I agree the diet should be renamed – if only to highlight the principles and increase the flexibility (and adoption)
