This was interesting. Have any of our Londoners or visitors to London dined here?
I havent been there and, assuming I make a trip to the capital in the foreseeable future, I’m unlikely to be going.
The story about the owner’s rant about customers not spending enough money was all over the UK food press a few weeks back. It did cross my mind to post a link back then but, frankly, I couldnt be arsed joining in what is clearly a contrived rant. The fact that this story has now crossed the Atlantic demonstrates the marketing success of a well publicised rant.
I read about this restaurant in the UK press. Trading on its eccentricity. I’m not sure I’m going to spend my money on the sort of stuff I can make at home in my very own ‘tiny open plan kitchen’. I also know a lot of people who identify as Communist so can round them up in my tiny dining room and have my very own similar eating establishment. We also have tons of books everywhere and can pretend to be a bookstore…
I do Northern Lefty Bloke. Can I come, please?
Communists, eh? Bunch of right wingers. What you need is us anarcho-syndicaliists
I’ve not been and am unlikely to but I’m so fascinated by the collision of posh people and dining culture and the expectation that restaurants change their practice to support sustainability and sanity for the worker. There is something so intriguing about it and also disturbing. I mean, one of the reasons people are able to eat out so much is down to the exploitation of staff and resources. Once we remove that exploitation. the product becomes expensive and as such excludes a part of the market (think fast fashion v independent clothiers) .
And thanks. @linguafood, now I’m going to go down a k-hole of Marxism.
Happy to be of service
Definitely. If you’re ever coming Portsmouth way, just drop me a DM and I’ll activate my Jaundiced Bittern pop-up!
OMG you’re in Portsmouth? My bestie lived there up until this year, teaching drama, but she’s accepted a position at the University of the Arts in London, where I hope to visit her this summer.
Never did make it to Portsmouth
I heard you call for an anarcho-syndicalist. How may I help?
We might know your bestie - my husband is a creative type who is pursuing a PhD at the university and knows many academics in the arts and humanities across the UK.
It’s a small world, for sure! We briefly had a UK member in my WFD Fb group who knew her!
Oh, we can get some anarchists together as well…they prefer to stay undercover.
