The Good News Thread In The Age of Corona

I think it became exaggerated during the early Covid stay at home orders here in SoCal. With so few cars on the roads people seemed to think they didn’t need to stop. There was also a lot more speeding on the freeways then too, but that hasn’t seemed to have subsided all that much.

This is an update on the bottle fed rescue kitten found by my BFF in LA area’s friend.
They thought he was a little boy, but it’s a girl, they named her Phoebe. I may have posted before about the wrongly identified gender. She’s a cutie and doing well, as you can see!

Blood and Money ~ John Hill was guilty as hell if you ask me.
Celebrity ~ His best book imo. Kleber, Mack and TJ. Gave me an inside look into the preacher business that I’ve never forgotten to this day.

T. Cullen Davis ~ Well, when you had plenty of money in the State of Texas, back in the 70’s, you could get away with murder…

ETA: I just ordered Serpentine. Can’t believe I missed that one.

You’re in for a treat @Miss_belle; in fact that book sticks with me more than the others. Did read Celebrity too, liked it, but am vague on the details after so many years. Three friends who killed a girl in their youth, who went on to be successful citizens, I think?

“Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow”? Or maybe the Kinks’ “Better Things?”

Had a few errands to do in the city, so decided to dine out on the deck of a favorite restaurant.

The good news is that we saw 100% mask compliance on our errands and while entering the resto. Bad news is we saw a group of about 8-10 people, all unmasked, huddled close together. I wanted to say something, but people are on edge, so I refrained. Figured it was safer to not say anything. I was surprised to read the CDC has new guidelines for people working in retail and service, to offer non maskers a mask, but not to confront them, if they refuse to wear them. The risk of violence is probably greater than the risk of Covid…

From a friend who lives in Davis, CA:

Just outside of Benicia I drove past a small grass fire next to the road. Traffic slowed. There were a couple of cars pulled over, people were trying to stomp it out. But it was windy and the flames were growing. I drove past, then yanked the wheel over, grabbed the can of water next to me, and got out. I found a towel in the trunk. The flames grew. Another car pulled over. As I ran towards the fire, with my stupid little can of water and my towel, the flames hit some brush. Now the flames were knee high. Now they were waist high. One of the guys was swatting at it with floor mat. I was thinking, “oh THIS is not going to go well.” It had doubled in size since I pulled over, and I wasn’t even at the fire yet. But I simply could not watch more of my home burn. So I ran at the fire.

A man appeared out of the smoke with a big jug of water and he dumped it on the brush. That knocked it back. And then I was there in it too. Swatting at the leading edge of the fire with my damp towel. Eating smoke. Stomping on it. More people pulled over. Everybody had stupid little plastic water bottles. Nobody had a fire extinguisher. But instead of six or eight feet stomping on it, now we had twenty. An old guy pulled over in a truck. He stumbled over with a half-empty flat of water bottles. “That’s all I can do,” he said. Then he got back in his truck.

The wind kept pushing the flames and new fires started farther from the main patch. But now there was a crowd of us. Every time a new spot started up, somebody beat it down. Cops showed up. They got out of their cars but just watched. I guess they were supervising.

After about 20 minutes, we had it beat. And then do you know what we did? We started picking up all the plastic water bottles on the scene. I thought to myself, “How very California.”

We hung out long enough for the fire trucks to arrive. Some guy started yelling at them that they still needed to douse it with water. It seemed under control so I got back in my car, stinking and coughing, and headed home. Fuck you, fire. I live here. And you owe me a towel.

This commentary really resonates with me: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CEhfBvqAd8e/?igshid=vf08svjsilu

"Becoming the change that we want to see, on an individual level, as uncomfortable as that is, that’s how we start to dig ourselves out of this mess…

We’ve got to stop ignoring people’s pain and suffering in exchange for our gain and profit and comfort."

Today I managed to get out to the small Greek store where I can get olive oil in a refillable bottle. An unexpected message of grace awaited at the checkout counter, and the words lifted my spirits.

Just before that I‘d made a wrong turn in the hubbub of road construction, and realized I‘d landed in front of the Portuguese bakery. Zero customers in sight. A perfect excuse to pop in for a homey loaf of bread and four custard tarts (pasteis de nata). The baked goods followed me home, I’ll insist.

I saw a beautiful late 60’ Chevy Impala with antique plates and… a bumper sticker! Who puts a bumper sticker on a car like that?

It read, “Nixon now more than ever.” :sunglasses:
