The Good News Thread In The Age of Corona

Lovely arrangements. I see you’ve used Soloman’s Seal which is currently looking fantastic in my garden. That’ll be shortlived - it gets attacked by caterpillars and the leaves are completely eaten within days.

By the by, Mothers Day in the UK is in mid-March. My mum died 40 years ago but Mrs H’s is still going strong. Of course, this year we were isolating so she got no visit from J (but did from other of her children).

Mom lives with me and is isolating. But sis called this morning and told mom to look at the bench on the front porch. There was a beautiful hanging basket of flowers, a big container of home-made chicken soup made by BIL and four rolls of tp

Thoughtful. Really thoughtful.

Nothing says: “Thank you mom for the gift of life” than 4 rolls of tp !!!

Neither H nor I knew what the plants were called; we have them lining the backyard path, and yes they don’t stay around long, but I like how they coincide with tulip season.

My kids just texted me - no get togethers due to Covid, but one of the kids sent me a glassy baby (candle holder) entitled Miracle. Just beautiful, and we all need a miracle right now @Harters!

Strange times indeed.

An unfortunate sign of the times. I hope mom had a wonderful Mother’s Day and I hope she share’s her gift!

Oh I’m sure she’ll share the soup

And yes, she had a good day. We ordered crab cakes, steak and salad for delivery. Enjoyed a nice bottle of merlot. And she spent hours on the phone with her daughters and grandaughters (even the greats got in on one of the calls).

Thought our mainly American base might like this. It was the front page of a weekly newspaper I subscribe to. Captioned “The Front Line”. We take our National Health Service seriously in the UK.

BIL got a whole organic chicken to make that soup. It was full of veggies and noodles (and, of course, chicken). I will be very sad when we finish it off tomorrow.

My sisters are ok cooks, but my BILs make some excellent soups.

This little birdie fell out of it’s nest at my friend’s house. It’s parents made their nest in a bamboo plant, but birdlet dropped out onto the patio. Not wanting their dog to eat it, they coaxed it into a dustpan, and put it under the bamboo. It’s mother checks on, and feeds it. They’ve named it Susie, after her dear, departed mother, and are chronicling it’s babyhood from this point. Will provide updates.

Moms (of all breeds) rock! Hope the little guy/girl lasts to summer/adulthood.

Yes, me too! I’m totally invested in her/his? future & adored it’s namesake.

I have fingers crossed for Susie. What sort of bird is she?

Hopefully Susie, the bird, is of the age where she’s nearly about to spread her wings.

Robins used to nest in a rhododendron in front of my office window at our old house. As soon as their fledglings grew big enough, mama or papa bird would hip check the young ones out of the nest onto the ground. From there, life was up to their little ones. We were astonished to witness that.

Fly, little one, fly!

Happy to have done so. And I agree with all of your comments. The painting comes from the New European which you probably know was established as an anti-Brexit weekly newspaper. That fight is now in the past although, of course, all the important battles remain to be fought. Sorry to continue with a wartime theme. In real life I am a military history researcher and author and the government’s use of “wartime language” peeves me greatly. A couple of weeks ago, there was a nurses’ trade union rep on TV saying (I paraphrase) "we are not heroes or making a sacrifice - we are just doing the jobs we chose to do and all we want is a safe environment in which to do it. "

@Harters, I’m pretty sure she’s a bluejay. Will send updated pics, hopefully. Yesterday, was day 4 of her being there, and still fed by mama. I’m rooting for her survival as well, and thanks!

Birds and bird behavior are fascinating to me @tomatotomato. Happy this didn’t happen at our house, as she wouldn’t stand a chance with Molly, our huntress cat on the prowl.
