The Good News Thread In The Age of Corona

I’m assuming the TV advertising buys/placements were done in bulk a LONG time ago by the company or ad agency, and the programming has had them inserted for specific shows for awhile.

I realize that but these were specific to corona. Maybe they were scheduled but modified to fit the times.

We should ask Don Draper or Peggy.

There is less congestion on Houston’s crowded freeways but those used to crawling along now have carte blanch to drive like utter fools and disobey every traffic law on the books.

The Chief of Police for the City of Houston and the Harris County Sheriff have just asked that idiot drivers slowdown and not turn freeways into raceways, there has been carnage.

Yes I know blanch is really blanche.

Found an entire gallon of disinfecting bleach in the treasure trove/garage today I didn’t know I had. 15 rolls of paper towels I knew I had, but hadn’t counted. Love these finds! Keeps things interesting in these bored times…

I’ll swap you 5 toilet rolls for 2 of your rolls.

Yeah, if only we weren’t a virtual community. My tp security isn’t nearly as high as the paper towels, and cleaning supplies.

Then there’s the fact that gas has gone down almost 50¢ a gallon here but I can’t drive anywhere anyway, so…

Yep, know what you mean @Midlife. Bought a few new clothes for Massachusetts and Boston trip in late May, that is now off, so, new clothes to wear nowhere, earrings and hat too. Maybe I’ll dress up and watch the Kentucky Derby on TV…

Cheap gas is probably helping most people that are still reporting to work though, so that’s good.

Fuel in the UK is also dropping. The current price is £1.11 per litre - can’t recall when it was last that low. If I’ve done the double conversion correctly that equates to $5.29 per US gallon.

Funny how in equitable gasoline prices are worldwide. Not funny.

That’s about what it costs here in Switzerland. And in earlier times, when border crossing was still possible, Germans living near the border used to come to Switzerland to fill their tanks.

1.40 a gallon in Houston but people are losing jobs because of it.

Yes, I should know that well. Lots of geologist friends that went into the oil exploration/drilling business. I remember all the refineries down there, esp. in Bay City and Lake Charles, La. Even got to visit an oil derrick, onshore, but did have friends who worked drilling platforms offshore. The H sat on drill rigs onshore, in various places. I worked on the Alaskan pipeline…sorry for all affected & loss of stock value. This whole thing is a mess…but cleaner air too. Hate to say it, but this pandemic, tragic as it is, could be nature’s way of rebalancing a hot, overcrowded planet. Just sayin. Yet, our planet has gone through many periods of climate change, and long before human habitation…

Within the US there are pretty big differences too. Where I am in SoCal $3.01; in neighboring a Nevada our daughter paid $1.95 today.
Most of that difference is taxes.

About 65% of the pump price in the UK is taxation.

A local independent craft store, The Crafting Closet (Wimington, MA) has been distributing cloth mask kits to volunteers who sew them up and return them to the shop, from whence they are donated to medical facilities, nursing homes, and first responders. Nancy’s business isn’t allowed to be open, though I think she’s far more essential than gun shops and liquor stores!
To do my part, I’ve been making extender bands that prevent or relieve chafing behind the ears of people who use facemasks with elastic ear loops. I’m sending them to hospitals directly, as well as to The Crafting Closet.

Maybe the huge Exxon Refinery on the Houston Ship Channel which is the second largest petrochemical complex in the world. Driving down 225 is amazing, chemical plants and refineries stretching for miles.

I sold tools from 1985-90 and have been in dozens and the crazy thing is they allowed the workers smoke. No open flames but they had car type lighters all over the plants.
