The erotic origins of Sicily's most iconic pastry

Sexual organs were not considered taboo in ancient Greek and Roman times.

It’s absolutely everywhere in the town where I stayed 10 days last year. I tried a bite, my mouth burnt. I have a very low tolerance for artificial/refined sugars.

Perhaps because I grew up in an area where Jewish and German bakeries predominated, I have never had an Italian cake, cookie, or pastry that I considered worth the calories. Too much sugar/honey, too much anise (= ANY anise, for me), and way too little butter and eggs. When I moved to Massachusetts decades ago, it came as a shock that most of the bakeries are Italian or Greek (same issues). Not that I need the calories!
