The Black Birch-KIttery Maine

DH and I had an extraordinarily good early dinner at the Black Birch in Kittery ME today.
BB opens at 3:30 daily for drinks and apps. A small menu of small plates of which we had the chicken livers and roasted turnips. I am not a fan of chicken livers but these were pretty good. Crunchy, good chicken flavor served on a leaf of endive, I liked them more than I thought I would. The roasted turnips were excellent.
Served on a pool of tart yogurt/goat cheese with cranberries and pistachios. The turnips had a really earthy flavor that worked so well with the tartness.
Cocktails were very nice, a gin concoction for me, tequila for him
At 4:00 our apps menus was swapped for the supper menu which included shared plates and supper plates.
DH ordered the Mushrooms in a sherry cream sauce with a popover and I asked for the fish and chips plate. The mushrooms were so meaty and filling, the creams sauce was not too rich, just right with the mushrooms. And the popover really made it a complete dish.
The fish came out perfectly cooked, very crispy atop twice fried hand cut fries, which held up to the heat of the fish, home made ketchup and a kind of sweet slaw that was well dressed and fresh.
Not a tartar sauce fan but apperently it was pretty good, DH dipped the fish and the fries both in it.
We finished off with a pot de creme w/fresh cream. Yum…light, chocolate-y, a nice end to our meal.
2 cocktails and 2 glasses of wine and the cost before tip was $105.00
Things to know-
The online menu is not exactly the menu we ordered from tonight.
The draft beer menu is extensive, there was a chalk board list on the wall behind us.
During the week the supper menu is available at 5:00 pm. Only on Saturday is it available at 4:00.
There is a small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant.
It is not a big space or bar and tables are communal.
There are several restaurants in the area and I would recommend Anju Noodle Bar and Festina Lente

Sounds delicious! Thanks for the intel.

Nothing like a short day trip and an early dinner when we need a change of pace. That stretch of coast is interesting. All three of your dining picks beckon. :slightly_smiling_face:
