I didn’t mean to direct this at you small_h.
No, but they had a good chocolate layer cake. That’s what I got!
I grew up in Massachusetts, the home of Friendly’s. There used to be tons of these around. I used to get the fried clam roll (aka the fried rubber band roll) and a vanilla Fribble.
No problem. I’ve never seen that movie. Not a fan of Kinison or Dangerfield (although I saw him live once, at an unannounced show at Catch a Rising Star, and he was pretty funny).
Proper clam rolls came from Howard Johnsons. On a ‘New England’ bun.
Good stuff. Never ordered bun version though; a plate of just fried clams and fries was all it took.
I’ll be tactful. HoJo’s sold fried clam strips in a top sliced hot dog roll. It was a tasty sandwich but calling it a ‘proper’ clam roll is wrong in my book… To my knowledge nobody else had clam strips. In fact, I’d say it’s been only recently where strips vs whole bellies appeared on menus. Clam rolls demand whole clams. But, not all whole bellied clam rolls are the same.
Some have huge bellies, some small and sweet. Different batters, too. Buttermilk, corn meal. Fresh oil makes a big difference. Next year, head for the Yarmouth, ME clam festival.
Generally speaking, we who love our clam rolls have our favorite places to get them. Although sometimes, the best option is a cardboard quart container or larger of fried clams eaten ocean side.
I sort of remember getting fried clams at Howard Johnson’s, or maybe I just remember someone telling me about them. I’m not sure. I am sure I remember some sort of crunchy wheat sort of donut; the only donut I ever craved.
ETA; it wasn’t HoJo’s it was “chock full o nuts”. I especially remember the one across the street from Radio City Music Hall, and we would take turns going while waiting forever on line to see a movie.
Yeah, we’re big fans of fried whole bellies too – again, without any roll.
Loved the HoJo clam strips as a kid. Let’s face it , deep fried whole belly clams were unheard of back then. Then some of us graduated to WBC’s. And not to get gross or anything but several years ago I bit into what was probably a spawned DFWBC and immediately spit it out. Takeout so we were at home. Took days to get the taste out of my mouth. I don’t wish that on anyone.
Ok, carry on…
Could you be so kind as translate that?
WBC = Whole belly clams
DFWBC = Deep fried whole belly clams
I thought everyone would know that but maybe not.
Some things literally make me laugh out loud and this is one of them. peace.
Just being funny ok.
Hmm…that clip seems weird to me. Doesn’t look like the Apollo or the circuit. Maybe T.A.M.I.?
I actually grew up near James Brown’s home in Addisleigh Park , St. Albans Queens, NY. I can still close my eyes and remember what it looked like. Ran buy I to watch Dark Shadows.
One of my many other memories about James Brown was the cruise from hell I took with my parents around 1973, on which I was so sick I rarely left my cabin for anything other than to sit in a theater and watch endless reruns of what in retrospect might have been some `60’s Jame’s Brown footage. I thought I would never go on another cruise as long as I lived. I did, and I’m glad.
Ahhhhhh! Thanks,
As mentioned above I’m from Kansas. I can describe several different kinds of catfish, crappie, blue gill, sunfish, but clams are still outside my field of seafood knowledge.
I’ve never seen (or heard of) Ski Party.
Now I’m on a vision quest!
:)
Me neither! So weird to think that was his best known recording.
" T.A.M.I. Show is particularly well known for James Brown’s performance, which features his legendary dance moves and explosive energy. In interviews, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has claimed that choosing to follow Brown and the Famous Flames was the biggest mistake of their careers, because no matter how well they performed, they could not top him.[3]
But he was a wife beater, so that’s that. *Please, please, please…don’t go"? * Yeah, right.
I guess it was all about the “cross over”. For some reason I was all about The Supremes and then Dionne Warwick last weekend.
" The show also featured the Supremes during their reign as the most successful female recording group of the era. The group had three chart-topping singles from July 1964 to December 1964, with the album Where Did Our Love Go reaching number two."
