The Anabaptist Community Taught Me Everything I Know About Sorghum Syrup

My Missourian grandfather worked in a sorghum mill. When we would visit there would always be a little tin pail of sorghum for grandmother’s biscuits.

Where in Missouri?

My sister lived in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. I have never forgotten that name. I didn’t realize that was Midwest.

I’ve always thought of it as the syrup, and from the south, but recently read about the grain.

Poplar Bluff is in the extreme SE, the Bootheel.
Bordered by Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas.
Missouri’s a schizophrenic state- below the river is the Ozarks, essentially western Appalachia.
Above the river was settled much more by Northern Europeans and especially Germans.
Thus, the Mennonites and Amish outside the big cities.
Lots of different cultures colliding.

I’m not sure, I was very young. I know they lived in Maysville (NW MO in DeKalb county) but I don’t know if that’s where they were living when we visited.

We were Kansans but I was born in Missouri in KC. Dual citizenship. I do have ancestors buried at Arrow Rock for what that’s worth.
DeKalb was always included in our tornado warnings so not that far away.

My birth certificate says I was born in DeKalb county, township of Polk. I don’t think it exists anymore.
