Thanksgiving 2023

I think mine had little matching turkey salt and pepper shakers too. I’m sure it’s over 30 years old.

Oh, and file under things I did not think I was almost out of: salt. I was in grave danger of having to run out and buy salt.

Everything turned out well. My first duck was a success. Sunshine REALLY liked this duck, so much so… she wants it more often. I did have to make up some homemade rolls (Glen and Friends Cooking – youtube), as I couldn’t locate any “Brown & Serve” rolls. We had Duck with orange sauce, cornbread stuffing with turkey gravy (jar), sweet potatoes (butter and brown sugar), corn and cranberry sauce. At the last minute, Sunshine decided she didn’t want peas, so I didn’t open a can.

Diamond Crystal is hit or miss in the stores I shop. So I get three boxes at a time from Amazon. I reorder as soon as I open the third, even though this is a house full of salt lovers who could always fall back on Maldon, Baleine, Camargue Fleur de Sel, Welsh grey, Bex, or Himalayan or even go to various smoked salts. DC is just perfection, and in truth we would be just fine with nothing else.

That duck looks delicious! Glad to hear everything worked out.

I should do that. I go through “bulk” salt pretty slowly, so I never think to stock up. I almost had to dip into the Hawaiian, or the Icelandic, or the truffled!

You did it! High five. Someday I’ll get around to roasting duck and your example will inspire.

When our friends sent out their Thxgiving invitation, and one guest proposed to bring two roast ducks as his contribution we were …. confused. Amused. Certainly, a bold choice for a meal that practically revolves around a ginormous poultry centerpiece

He does have a way with duck, the hosts never declined or suggested something else, and so we got to munch on juicy morsels of fatty duck along with the deviled eggs, cheeses, and other nibbles before the main event while sipping Mimosas.

The turkey was pleasantly salty & juicy, dilled green beans the German couple brought delicious, and I even had a spoon each of mashed & the two different dressings/stuffings. I also tried a Korean dish someone brought that seemed to be seasoned rice & carrots in an open dumpling form (?).

I didn’t count the ridiculous number of πs brought, and I personally only tried a tiny slice of untraditional but delish Boston cream pie & had a teeny taste of the hostess’ key lime pie (made GF for the one guest who was no longer around for dessert :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:), but I wasn’t going to waste my time on any of the store-brought πs.

My salad was snarfed up, leaving just a tiny bowl I may enjoy for lunch, along with some of the turkey we were sent home with.

Overall, just another wonderful evening with good friends

I made a key lime pie for my last Thanksgiving dinner with guests, because one of them had requested it. Everyone stayed, however, and the pie magically disappeared. None of us really craved pumpkin pie, so it did not make an appearance.

I despise pumpkin or sweet potato pie., but I don’t care for either in even “savory” dishes, and I’m generally not huge on pies. Key lime OTOH? Bring it :yum:

Wow, what a spread! Those rice things look a lot like inarizushi (sometimes called age sushi), a type of sushi comprised of tofu that has been deep-fried and then simmered in a tasty sauce, then cut open to form a pouch, then finally stuffed with sushi rice. It’s not uncommon to put shreds of carrot in the rice (to give it color, I guess). I don’t know if there’s a Korean equivalent to inarizushi. Could be - I’m not all that familiar with things Korean.

Yes, thank you! That’s what she called them! Memory’s a bit foggy due to the copious mimosas and wine consumed :grimacing:

That sounds like an excellent meal and pat on the back for managing GF!

Swap slices with you  .Key lime always LOOKS good but seldom tastes citrus-y enough for me. Pumpkin, on the other hand is always welcome on my plate.

I’ll happily partake of a cherry pie with real cherries in it, not cherry flavored goo-filling. And not too sweet, please. I’m not looking for Tastykake.

Back in high school, a friend of mine and I had convinced another friend that the pouch was made of a goat scrotum and was filled with rice. We feared my dad was going to ruin the joke when he overheard us arguing about it, but Dad was game for a good practical joke, so he joined in. “No, no, that’s not right. Traditionally, they’re filled with boiled maggots!”

[RIP, Dad. Three years ago today.]

What a dad!

OMG. That’s funny. And I’m sorry for your loss <3

Similar situation only mine was dish soap.

Which was a nice excuse to let a few things soak overnight
