Any suggestions for what might be one of my last meals in NYC before I move out of the country? We plan to come back to visit, but it could be awhile. Not married to the neighborhood but that’s where we are staying and it will have been a long week and even longer day.
Thoughts on Barn Joo? Found a thread from 2022 with someone recommending it, but no real specifics.
Re: Atoboy and Atomix. You seem to indicate that Atoboy is more expensive than Atomix. In fact, it’s the opposite and substantially so. Atoboy has a 3-course menu with choices for each course. $75 per person, service included. Atomix is a chef’s counter 12-course tasting menu. No price on the website. Via Google, it’s $395 per person.
We have not been to Atomix, but we have been to Atoboy twice. The food was delicious. The sensational fried chicken is a must! An add on @$28 and well worth it.
Yeah, I may have just phrased it incorrectly. What I meant is Atoboy if Atomix is outside the budget.
Ive been to Atoboy when it was still relatively new and much more affordable. If I understand correctly, its $75 pp for a 4 courser where you choose from the menu, and if you want the chicken (which I had and enjoyed), its an extra $28. Not sure I like this deal. I would have no problem paying $28, even more for the chicken, but would really much prefer having it as one of the tasting menu options
I am not a fan of Barn Joo (everything I had was overly sweet), but I like Her Name is Han and BCD Tofu - a must if you like soondubu. Concur with @Ziggy about Olle, which has some dishes I hadn’t seen elsewhere, like mudfish stew and moon snail salad (both very nice).
2nd the rec of BCD Tofu House. It’s a chain so not only found in New York, but it’s really good food at cheap prices. And we always get seconds on the accompanied fish.
Looking more closely at Atoboy’s menu, it seems that sea urchin is a course by itself. If so, then you are correct about $75 for four courses. (Dessert is extra, not one of the prix-fixe courses.)
I checked my Flickr. Our first visit to Atoboy was in Dec. 2016, soon after it opened, and the price was ridiculously low. Our second time was in Sept. 2019. Both times, the fried chicken was one of the course choices.
(Note: Since we are still not doing indoor restaurant dining, Atoboy is now out for us.)
If it was one of my last meals of Korean food in a while, I’d go straight for bbq. Miss Korea or Don’s Bogam are always reliable, Nubani is spendier but should be memorable.
Another upscale-ish (but not crazy) option is Gaonnuri, which comes with a great view to accompany lovely food.
I like Her Name is Han, but it’s not a "last meal"kind of place imo.
Thai needs more parameters – how spicy? Upscale or divey?
Best wishes on your relocation – where are you moving?
Thanks, everyone! I have a low tolerance for sweet, so I’ll definitely pass on Barn Joo.
Sorry to not give enough info. Just found out last night our Friday night plans (this Friday night) got canceled so just wanted to get something posted. I did book at Olle this morning for a placeholder and will cancel if restaurants mentioned since look more appealing.
Definitely something more budget friendly (we have Gramercy Tavern Saturday night & I’ll be on a retirement budget at the end of next week, lol) and spicy but not Thai spicy.
