My son’s 18th birthday party is in full swing downstairs. It was less than 2 weeks in the planning. I think teenage boys are probably quite relaxed when it comes to such things. Main requirement was for alcohol, specifically lots of beer and vodka and mixers. Tortilla chips and salsa. Potato wedges and sour cream. And pizza.
I offered to make homemade salsa but the offer was flatly refused. Doritos salsa only.
Now the house is full of excited teenagers chatting with a background of music from a Bluetooth speaker playing my son’s playlist.
Wedges in the oven. Waiting for Domino’s delivery. Being 18 is so uncomplicated in some ways.
Yup, that sounds like an 18yo’s party back when I was turning 18 in 1976! Although my hard liquor of choice back then was J&B Scotch for whiskey sours.
Some things never change, and sometimes that’s a good thing! Happy birthday to your new adult!
I remember a 15th bday party I went to where the boys went nuts on the beer (I didn’t drink any booze at the time). I was so impressed with how the bday girl’s parents put up with all the mayhem (dance floor in the basement, etc.), whereas the mom was impressed with my sobriety and maturity… until an Indonesian buddy got me high for the first time EVER, and the next time I saw her carrying around the bucket and mop I just laughed hysterically.
I have my fingers crossed. Most of the kids I’ve known since they were very young. We’ve warned the neighbours of the danger of noise and disruption. I hope nobody is planning to get high! For the time being, the most anxiety-provoking activity has been the newly minted drivers maneuvering in our driveway. Our fence was in danger at one point. Cue lots of hilarity from assembled teenagers while I watched anxiously from my bedroom window. Later, lots of cheers for a boy who successfully reversed out of our crowded driveway to leave early (dropping his sister off at the airport).
Party all done and dusted. Some kids bedding down in the living room. I went down to survey the damage - mostly spills and litter. I cleaned up the worst of it and will do the rest tomorrow.
