To be fair, the I-9 document which proves eligibility to work in the US is required for all employers, and has been for decades. Unless these were all very recent hires I’m surprised these wouldn’t have been flagged earlier. For a company that has been expanding as quickly as Tatte, they should be using the government’s online system which would flag any SSN discrepancies within a day or sooner (sometimes it’s within minutes of entering the info). Smaller companies might still get away with a manual form that doesn’t give you an automatic result, even though the government has been pushing the eVerify system for years.

Many years ago when I was still working in publishing, we had large warehouses in TX and in the midwest for distribution. We would get I-9 info mismatches all the time, and it meant unfortunately not being able to keep those employees. No online system back then, so we would learn about them after months on the job. Just pointing out that this is the course of business for any company, and may not be happening only because of the current political climate.
