Taste of Shaxian [San Mateo]

Good reviews on Google maps but I was thoroughly unimpressed. Shaxian noodles were bland and stuck together in a single glob. Spicy wonton soup was spicy but had no other flavor – wontons seemed to be flavorless tiny pork meatballs with a thing wonton skin. Fried pork buns were extremely greasy inside and out.

Hard pass. Reviews likely inflated because you get a free entree with a 5 star review.

I tried it too. Also unimpressed. It would have been about 9 months ago and I don’t remember what I had. Dumplings and maybe a noodle dish.

It did remind me of a very chinese place. Tablet ordering. Uncomfortable seats.

At the time, the google number was up at something like 4.9 and now it’s down to 4.5, which still seems high. I would say it’s more like 4.1.

On a related note, I also tried Izakaya Fusion Grill Keitan, one block over on 3rd ave. They’re open late. I was similarly unimpressed, and that’s still up at Google 4.6. It was more like nothing was wrong, nothing was great. More of an average place, and not one that had any particular menu entries that I was so happy with that I’d be back (compared to Izakaya Ginji, or compared to the atmosphere and bincho at Kokko).

Haven’t a clue about this specific restaurant – and never will – but I recognize the place name from my China days.

One of their specialties was steamed dumplings with a not-sweet peanut sauce. Also, their logo was a Pac-Man wannabe.
