Taste of Old Street (SF, Richmond District)

I had a beautiful solo dining experience at SF Richmond District Chinese haunt called Taste of Old Street. Because of the presence of lots of skewers on the menu, it seems to me to be a Northern Chinese restaurant, but, like most Chinese restaurants in America, there were some offerings from all kinds of styles of Chinese food.

I got Lamb Skewers, Dan Dan Noodles, Cucumber Salad, and a beer (only Japanese beer offerings, but the Sapporo they gave me hit the spot). The meal ran me only around $35 including tip, which is not bad for a balanced feast for one; I find that it can be hard to get a decently balanced meal as a solo diner at Chinese restaurants.

The restaurant’s atmosphere was very casual, which was perfect, since I was in the mood to sit and write in a journal. It also seems to be a newer restaurant.

I will definitely be returning.

Lamb skewers and cucumber salad, which was replete with garlic and cilantro.

The full spread.

My finished meal.

Interesting to see they do a wet-style dan dan mein. That’s a Hong Kong variant; the original is dry. Both are good, just different.

Love your meal and report. But I equally love your lie-flat notebook and your Muji pen. (Yes, I am a pen and notebook geek!)

Interesting. I usually suspect a restaurant is Hong Kong-style when they’re in SF, but this one threw me off with the lamb skewers!

Oh yes! I feel like in Chinese/Asian restaurants, it’s a little more socially acceptable to sit alone, eat dinner, and take notes.
