Taking glassware in hand luggage

So, I’m going to a wedding in India next week and have chosen a present for the couple getting married:

I collected the box from my local Waitrose (same company as John Lewis). It’s in a nice cardboard box with the flutes packed in pairs in individual small cardboard boxes and the bucket in a separate box, all fitting snugly in the big box. There is some movement of the flutes within the boxes but I couldn’t hear any clinking.

I don’t want to put this big box in my checked in suitcase because it is pretty big and will take up lots of space in my case. I have a small hand luggage case which this box would fit in and I’m thinking I’ll just carry it as hand luggage and be super careful with it.

Does this sound ok?

I also bought a bottle of champagne in a presentation box but am putting that in my checked in suitcase.

I might add something to the flutes for protection — either bubble wrap or some small clothing items (socks, underwear, thin tshirt) to restrict the movement, even for hand luggage. Or put a thin piece of cardboard between each pair so they don’t damage each other,

I once carried two flutes in hand luggage, after slipping each flute into a sock (clean, of course!). Worked great.

I would put the entire package I a plastic bag just in case something does break you aren’t picking glass out of the rest of your items
