Early Noon Check-in at our Kaohsiung hotel. Typhoon Kong-Ray’s Fury hit HARD as we were settling into our home-away-from home for the coming eight nights.
Raided the mini-bar, the 7/11 a mere 50 metres outside didn’t quite warrant the effort in this inclement weather. We’ll just have to replenish the mini stock (our standard SOP) before check-out.
Riding out the storm with a Spot of Tea, how Colonial!
Thus fortified, back upstairs for a brief Power Nap before HAPPY HOUR!

At the crack of 5:30pm, we returned to the lounge for a drink (or three) and a bite or two.
Balvenie Doublewood 12yo??
An emphatic Yes, Please!!
Beef Soup, the Tainan specialty. We just came in from Tainan, version here is a good effort.
The Roast Chicken was excellent!! The supporting players were also top notch. Loved the Mashed Pumpkin, their nod to Halloween.
Good Breads and some appreciated Cheeses.
Just enough room for a sampling of Sweets.
From our table, there is the hole-in-wall down the street where we had the BEST SAKURA SHRIMP Fried Rice earlier this year. You betcha this will be our first bite once the storm abates and we can resume our normal eating routine!!!
Eager. Anticipation!!!

Breakfast, completing the typhoon bunker trifecta.
Latte braced with double shots of Espresso to start. Salty Soy Milk with a Crouton, can’t say a definitive improvement over the usual YouTiao.
Assorted fresh squeezed juices. Dragonfruit and Kiwi. Healthy, no added sweeteners.
Fresh cut Fruits, always welcomed and appreciated.
Tempted, but passed on the Baked Goodies.
Limited selection but well prepared mains plus accompaniments.
The breakout star was the Sesame Ball!! With what I thought was a creamy Hom Dan (salty egg) center, but the chef confirmed as Pumpkin. Mochi Perfection. Absolutely Delicious!!
Wanted but didn’t have room for the Chicken Bitter Melon Soup. One of my favorite soups.
So much for just a coffee and a piece of fruit.
The storm had blown over, took a refreshing early morning walk. Other than lots of debris, some toppled over scoots and trees, no manifest destruction.
Being cooped up for 24 hours have whet our appetite even more for myriad yummy Taiwan foods outside. Eat on!!!

Screwed up. Stopped into the lounge for a quick libation before heading out to the streets. (Really??)
Buckskin Beer, from Kavalan, distillers of the excellent Taiwan Single Malt Whisky. No Kavalan offered here, settled for Balvenie, an excellent alternative.
Spareribs Taiwanese prep. The “soft bone” is almost the most enjoyable part. The meat was falling off the bone, soft bone crave worthy.
Sampling of Fruit and Baked Goods.
Browsed a nearby night market. Wife picked up a couple of comfort eats.
The known night markets are almost always packed with folks from all over, fun in its own way. We now gravitate to more local venues where locals actually shop for their simple treats. Can still be crowded at the better popular joints, just less jostling and elbows.
