Taiwan Autumn 2024: Tainan City

Took the HSR (high speed rail) from Chiayi to Tainan. A short 30 minute, 40 mile sprint station to station. The taxi ride from Tainan station to our hotel took exactly as long as the train ride.

We’ve stayed at quite a few hotels these past few years, the view from this property has to be one of the best. Rice paddies stretched to the horizon, fish laden waters (in my fantasy) flowing past in through various channels. I see myself relaxing and indulging in many an adult beverages on the lanai in my future.

The closest market was some ways away. Fortunately, we have club access for happy hour refreshments.

Some light bites.

A glass (+) of rouge for the lady. A ball and bat (shot and beer) for me from the self service bar.

A very pleasant 30 minute stroll into the Anping Historic area. Marked a few tempting food spots, but not hungry enough to partake.

Before heading “home”, we did stop into a convenience store to gawk and stock up on some goodies.

A Dog and some brew for me, some always good convenience store Oden for she.

Life is good!!

BEEF SOUP is one of Tainan’s specialties. Local Tainan beef is sliced and dipped RAW into a fragrant savory broth milliseconds before delivery to your table. Perfect rare tender beef in seconds, washed down with fragrant toothsome soup, a true simple pleasure!!!

We arrived early and avoided the stantions that were already in place to control the crowd to come.

The first impression, the butchers busily breaking down the primals, which must be an ongoing never ending job for the team.

The liver and tongue were already sold out, next delivery at 2pm. JIT (just in time) fresh meat delivery, how cool is that!?!?!

No problema, plenty of other goodness on the menu.

The Beef Soup, beautiful!! Deceptively simple!

A nearby server saw I was taking more than 10 seconds to dive in and gently nudged me to get started. They take their beef soup seriously here!!!

Tainan Beef Fried Noodle. A sprinkling of greens, shiitake, scallions, onion and of course, garlic.

Gnow Jop. Some of the best beef offal I’ve ever had. Liver, intestine and stomach stir fried with scallions, garlic in a distinctive sauce. Woulda been even greater with some fresh steamed white rice.

All nicely complemented with some Water Snowflake accented with garlic and tree seeds.

There were quite a few more items we want to try. We’ll have to come back, soon!!

** in the old days, beef restaurants did not open on Wednesdays. Mutton not available on Tuesdays.

Used to be meat was processed and served fresh the same day of slaughter. Slaughterhouses traditionally closed on set days, thus no meat for restaurants.
