I was alerted to the the existence of Taco City DC by a Washington Post article a while back. I went to the location south of the Marine Barracks on 8th St., SE. And now there is a location in Brookland as well, though the menu is not exactly the same.
I am not sure what the Marines think of these tacos. They are small and expensive. But boy are they serious. I can’t reproduce this at home.
I tried the carne asada and the flautas ahogadas. The flautas are made with a braised beef, the texture is similar to brisket, so not like the carne asada. The carne asada, though, is not like others I’ve had and is not grilled as the menu indicates. It is chunks of very tender beef cooked in what I can only assume is lard with a nice sauce to it.
The drowning of the crispy flautas is with a morita sauce that has a nice little kick to it, but it is totally pleasant at the same time.
We also got a pozole, which is to be avoided. That was a mistake, too salty. I will try to rescue it at home.
Stick to the antojitos and you will be rewarded. I am already thinking about my return.
I can completely endorse Taco City. It’s been our standby for before and after Washington Nationals games for a few years now. They are very tolerant of your nursing a drink and a plate of tacos while waiting out a rain delayed start to a game.
We’ve had a bunch of the tacos and I think there are a lot of winners in the mix, although I can’t remember details at this point. I do remember the grilled octopus taco being very good.
I’m surprised that you think they’re expensive, however. I’ve always thought the prices to be very reasonable, but I haven’t eaten there for a few months, so maybe they’ve gone up.
