‘ SUSHI UMI, Markham ‘ - A stupendous, wow-worthy ‘quality+value’, ‘Highway #7 stretch‘ Omakase experience.

Despite recent and continuous closing of some badly missed, long standing Canto-food icons, along the popular Highway7 ‘food stretch’. O’Mei, Richmond Court, John’s BBQ, Golden Abalone etc……to name a few. I was glad, bringing to light, a few newly uncovered and excellent establishments to fill the void. Their additions are more than worthy enough to uphold and sustain the reputation and popularity of this Richmond Hill food destination. Albeit, these gastronomic replacements are all Japanese Omakase restaurants!...Sushi Gin, Sushi Taki, Sushi Umi.

It is a well practiced Chinese custom to have a family gathering dinner the day after Chinese New Year’s day. Tonight, for this celebration, we decided to follow a recommendation made to me by a trusted Nipponophile foodie friend, ex-chowhounder ‘skylineR33‘. Instead of braving the New Year crowd and having run-of-the-mill, ‘production-line’ quality restaurant food at some packed Chinese eateries. Our family gathering was held at this obscurely located Omakase Sushi-Ya close to Markham’s ‘Whole-foods store’.

For an incredible price of only $98, we were offered the following well crafted and outstanding delicacies by the friendly, communicative and skilled Chef:

  • A couple of delightful and tasty otsumami appetizers that included marinated
Japanese seaweed and an amazingly delicious and rare ‘ Shirako in a delicious
    sweet ponzu sauce ‘.
  • 10 Nigiri pieces, each individually crafted and dressed and hand delivered to us
at the Sushi Bar. These include Hokkaido Scallops, Suki, Amaebi, Shima-Aji,
Bontanebi topped with Bafun Uni, Chu-Toro, Soy marinated Ikura, Aburi Sea
Trout, Aburi Otoro, Hokkaido Bafun Uni
  • Handroll of Maguro and diced pickles……creative and good with appealing
    textural contrast
  • Tamago, flame torched top created a delightful crispy layer
  • Fish Bone and Tofu Soup; Delicate and packed with sweet umami flavor
  • Homemade dessert of Macha and Coconut Panna Cotta. Refreshing,
aromatic and with just the right sweetness

A few of us, with larger appetites, decided to order a few special extra a-la-carte nigiri pieces on the side. These included the Aburi O-Toro and flame torched Foie Gras with Maple syrup glaze sushi……the latter, so R@#%&^$ing good!

Overall, we find the choices for the Neta varied and well chosen, super-fresh and of fine quality. The Shari, well textured and the taste profile balanced to our liking using red vinegar.

Service was super attentive and friendly.

In this day and age of high inflation and cost of living. It is totally amazing and unheard of to find such an enjoyable, standout quality and awesome value Omakase meal! Maybe the presence of nearby competition helps to play a part?

Do head over there ‘pronto ‘ and give it a try before the HST vacation is over!! Well worth the drive!

I pass by Sushi Umi very frequently but only tried it this New Year’s Eve - mostly thanks to your review, Charles! It is very nondescript and I’m usually in that plaza for take-out at other establishments. But I finally made it, one year later haha.

It’s another place within walking distance of where I live, so it was a fantastic opportunity for me and the husband to have a meal with a nice bottle of sake. Corkage was $35 per bottle, which is pretty reasonable to me - we brought our own bottle which we purchased in Japan on our quasi-honeymoon last year.

I’m once again bad at remembering what I ate but tried my best to label.

Seaweed and shirako

Scallop

Sea bream

Amaebi

Saba(?)

Tiger shrimp(?)

Akami - probably our favourite of the night because the rice was rolled in fresh yuzu zest! It was a combination that we both loved.

Cod(?) with uni

I think he called this tuna belly?

Torched fatty tuna

Uni

Handroll with tuna and takuan

Tamago - thought this was going to more similar to the castella tamago that I had in Japan last year, based on the shape, but it was custard-like! Almost like a creme brulee, especially since the top was dipped in sugar and then torched.

Soup with shrimp stock

Tofu pudding - my husband laughed at me because I don’t like the taste of tofu at all and it usually precludes me from finishing tofu dishes, but I managed to finish this lol.

I think many similar items to Charles from a year ago, but definitely some differences! We were thinking about getting some extras but I was gun-shy since the previous week, we had overstuffed ourselves at Pears.

Service was wonderful, even for a full house on new year’s eve with multiple seatings. My husband had left his phone on the placemat and luckily we noticed before we got too far, but they also called me as soon as they noticed.

I think this is probably the best value omakase I’ve been to though! We visited Ibushi earlier in the year for the husband’s birthday (I took photos but was too busy to write up here) so we were comparing on the walk home. We both thought that they were roughly equivalent (hard to compare when there’s so much time in between meals too!) but for us, it’s hard to beat “within walking distance” for this kind of value. I think the only better “value” omakase I have had was at Sushi Yugen downtown when I went with my intern for lunch! And “walking distance”, in addition to some other factors, also colours my view of that experience haha.

I might go back to Sushi Umi for my birthday in ~6 months - we have another nice bottle of sake to drink anyway.
