For tonight’s dinner, I made another loooong drive from way up north to one of my favorite restaurants located in the far western edge of the GTA. These days, with most dining establishments, using inflation, labor costs and supply chain issues as excuses to gouge and hike up menu prices. It was a surprising and a welcoming sight to see Sushi Kaji’s Omakase offering is still reasonably priced, unchanged from my previous visit, almost six months ago!
As in the past, ingredients used were of high quality standard, selection was varied and impressive, dishes skillfully and lovingly prepared, presentations visually appealing……the end result, a sensational, heavenly delight with every bite.
Our Kaji-san’s crafted blind-tasting menu was a generous and filling 19 course affair, featuring 4 Otsumami, Sashimi, 13 Nigiri pieces, hand roll and dessert.
Apart from the wild Ocean Trout from Scotland, Tako ( octopus ) from Portugal, Snow crab from North Eastern Canada and Botan Ebi from BC, the rest of the ingredients, used for the Neta, were all shipped from Japan. Standouts of the evening included the umami laden, velvety Chiramushi with Tiger prawns, the melt-in-the mouth Blue-Fin Chu-Toro and O-Toro, the priced Hokkaido Bafun Uni and the Snow crab leg meat topped with soy sauce marinated Ikura.
The dainty Grapefruit granita, creamed cheese, nut de coco and lychee jello, multi-level dessert was refreshing and exquisitely delectable.
To pair with the food, we selected an aromatic and fruity Sake - “ Zaku ‘Ho-No-Tomo’ Junmai ( Mie ) ….lovely off dry with exotic Melon, Lychee and Muscat grape undertone.
Service was friendly and attentive as usual.
All in all, a most enjoyable and memorable evening….definitely well worth the drive.
