Supermarket Pet Peeves

As mentioned upthread, ShopRite has a station where you can scan your affinity card and load the digital coupons onto it there. I take it that this is not common,?

Yes… There is also one grocery store in my area, that has special digital coupons called “BOOST” coupons. You have to pay $99/year to join “BOOST” to get the special digital coupons. I’m careful to check for “Boost” in the coupon details and avoid them. I find myself shopping there less and less, the added confusion (and work) isn’t worth the savings.

Its quite easy to get confused when selecting the digital coupons and see if you qualify for that price. I select my digital coupons on my desktop, the larger screen helps me read all the details related to that particular coupon.

If you tell the cashiers that they’re supposed to manually enter the discounts, at least at my Safeway.

Moderator hat on.

This is a thread about supermarket pet peeves. Please take the political talk elsewhere. Thanks.

Hat off.

None of my local grocery stores carry sheets of Nori. I had to order it off of ebay.

Avocados are on sale this week and I have just enough (imitation) crab in the freezer to make Sunshine a few California Rolls. I’m going to go ahead and pick up the avocados and hope the Nori arrives in a timely manner.

Not sure where you live, but once again I am so glad I live in central NJ, where I have a choice of two large Asian supermarkets near me, not to mention South Asian near me and a ton of South Asian further away in Edison. Plus small Hispanic groceries as well.

There is an Asian Market about 30 minutes away… just a little too far to be worth the drive.

Lee Lee’s is where I go in that area. Holy crap…great store.

Tried that. These cashiers won’t tie it into my ‘card’ because I can’t produce a QR ‘reader’. “It’s a security issue.” Really?

Weird. 180 degrees from what I was told.
The funny thing is I only shop at Safeway for the on sale items (usually deli chicken and milk) because they’re entirely too expensive.

My two Asian markets are also about that far, but one is very close to our favorite Sichuan restaurant, so whenever I’m picking up food to go, I pop into the market (and also get fresh made buns to go with the meal). The other is on the way home from one of our doctors. Admittedly, neither are a hop, skip, and a jump from us, but at least I don’t have to order from Amazon!

Where I am, Safeway is Goldilocks Just Wrong. It’s not the best choice for quality (Haagen), nor prices (Grocery Outlet). I only go to Safeway if I’ve struck out elsewhere trying to find something. Where I live, Safeway’s meat is terrible–below Walmart in quality.

I had the same experience with Safeway - about 20 years ago. Haven’t been back since. There are better alternatives (more expensive) and better alternatives (cheaper) - at least in my area.

I go the same Asian market as @eleeper (as well as the restaurant she mentions). It’s also about 30 minutes from me though I come from the other direction from her. It is well worth the ride. I don’t go often but when I do I stock up on all kinds of items I either can’t find locally or which are quite a bit less expensive.

I just got an update from ebay and my Nori arrives Saturday. YEA!!

The avocados (on the other hand) won’t be ripe enough to use for a few days. Although, it was a great sale price they are hard and will need some time before use. Once their ready, I’ll grab a cucumber & defrost my (imitation) crab.

I put the avocados in a brown paper bag and have it sitting on the counter. Is this the proper way to ripen avocados or is there a better way??

I don’t bother with a bag. I buy the greenest, hardest avos possible, and just let them ripen on the kitchen counter. Once ripe they last in the fridge for about a week.

If you’ve got a banana or apple, put either in the bag with the avocados. They’ll throw off ethylene, which will hasten ripening.

Tomatoes work, too.

I tried the banana-in-a-bag once, and it made no difference in ripening time.

As for the fridge, wrapping the avocado in cling wrap helps it last longer.

Are you here to bust yet another myth in which I most fervently believe?
