Supermarket Pet Peeves

Really? Even on the smaller inside stalks? (You know, the leaves you’d actually want to eat.)

I just went to check, and it wasn’t my current bunch, but I think so. I noticed it because it was the leaves that I wanted. I remember the top was really squared off where you would expect to see leaves, but maybe there were some nestled inside.

I would bet you dollars to donuts there were, because how could there not be? Someone went through the celery and ripped the leaves out?

Around here they sell both reg stalk celery and what the call “hearts of” celery.

The latter is abt 2-3 inches shorter, and has little of the leaves. But yes, some, down inside the inner stalks, are smaller shoots as you mention with a few leaves.

I was picturing something like this; a picture from a local Safeway ad

I see some leaves.

Yep, as @linguafood said, these are sold as celery hearts. Maybe a Pennsylvania thing?

Same thing in my area. No big leaves on the celery hearts, because the big stalks are lopped off; small leaves inside.

But uncut celery is also readily available, if you want the big bitter leaves for some reason.

Nope, I can get celery hearts in Massachusetts as well.

In Florida and Westchester too. Hearts and whole stalks with leaves.

We get untrimmed (all the leaves), hearts (leaves in the inside stalks), and sticks (no leaves, meant to be dipped in blue cheese :yum:).

There’ll be like a lop off the top when I buy at Woodmans, and I wonder what the hell they’re doing with the leaves I adore.

No, there’ll be a few leaves, but most of the top is missing. I need a new bunch, and I’ll take a picture when I grab them. They’re right next to the "hearts.’

Imperfect Foods celery is always shipped intact with leaves. And filthy!

I sometimes get the full ones with leaves, sometimes just the hearts when I don’t want as much - although when you get the hearts, they’re packaged two to a package. So you’re probably getting the same amount. :woman_shrugging:

Interesting! I think of celery hearts differently; much smaller, whiter, I assumed the least string, tenderest , innermost parts, and often sold in a bag. I dont recall having bought them lately, but that was my impression.

Picture from the same Safeway, and labled “celery hearts”.

They do look similar, but they used to look different. They both look kind of gigantic compared to what I am used to.

I’m used to getting something like this, “uncut celery” I suppose, so when I saw one that was chopped off, it surprised me.

Anyway, I guess that’s all cleared up!

The smaller ones still exist, but are generally sold with pre-cut carrots to be used as a vehicle for dips. I suppose this came with the rise of crudites and wings (so of course stores can charge a higher price).

Like heats of romaine, it seems like the hearts are getting much bigger.

I’m fine with filthy. I got a sink. I want leaves. I’ll just have to look and selectively shop at places that have them intact.

Trader Joe’s celery hearts have enough leaves for me - this isn’t even all of them.
