Supermarket Pet Peeves

Yes, it is employee owned. The people who work there are wonderful and happy. So often when I shopped in Westchester the cashiers were unhappy and constantly complaining. I love Publix. I’ve moved to Florida.

My current peeve is (are?) the very thin green “compostable” plastic bags that are replacing the usual clear plastic produce bags. They’re difficult to open, they split easily, and they’re floppy enough that the produce sometimes falls out. And they’re basically single-use, where I used to reuse the clear plastic ones several times.

And they are not actually compostable, at least with my local service.

We have two main trash haulers in our area. One does not allow food waste (has to be separated and binned with garden waste) to be in compostable/biodegradable plastic bags while the other one does. When I researched it I found that the reason for NOT allowing them was that they got caught in their machinery. No clue why that’s not a problem for the other company.

[The company that doesn’t allow plastic bags also didn’t allow paper bags, so you had trash bins with open food waste causing all kinds of disgusting issues for people. After lots of complaints they finally now allow brown paper bags.]

That’s my understanding as well.

I couldn’t find the canned milk at my local store yesterday. Usually it’s on a low or mid level shelf near the baking goods, or occasionally near the hot cereal. Sometimes next to the coconut milk.

I walked up and down the baking aisle, cereal aisle, and walked through the health food and canned veg aisle. I finally found it. It was on sale, 2 for $4, when regular price is $2.79 the past 18 months, and it was on the top shelf.

Most people who buy canned evaporated milk (not condensed Eagle brand) are senior citizens from the Maritime provinces and the Prairies. I’m sure other customers were frustrated that they couldn’t find a product that’s always in plain view.

I might send the store manager an email.

I have more trouble with stuff on the bottom shelves. I can’t bend anymore so I have to sit down on the floor to get those items!
And then getting myself back up!

I’m 5 foot 6 and I couldn’t reach anything that wasn’t right on the edge of the top shelf. My photo is of the top 3 shelves, and there are 3 more below the Splenda.

I never would have thought to look up there. It has always been at eye level or lower. It’s usually on a middle shelf at this store, Metro, and on a middle shelf at Loblaws, and on a low shelf at Sobeys.

I guess the store is selling more Splenda :joy:

We throw all of those into our home compost bin. If they end up not actually breaking down, my wife just sifts them out.

Do they mostly break down?

I think so. We use bags like that to line the compost bin in the kitchen; when the bag fills up, we take it outside to the big bin in the yard.

The ones I bought break with the slightest provocation! I wouldn’t try to carry anything wet in one.

That’s the type I use with our green bin pickup. The city only allows paper liners or green compostable liners.

Some compostable bags don’t compost easily. I don’t use any bags with our backyard garden compost because the bags weren’t composting.

Sometimes I double- bag them before putting them in the bin.

I put my kitty litter scoopings in similar “green” bags, which I purchase. Since I live in a high rise, the dumpster contents just get done by the city. We have break-outs for recyclables; that I do, particularly all those Amazon boxes. :joy:. But we don’t have anything as specific as compostables for our buildings.

A local fishmonger has started wrapping chunks of salmon in these, before wrapping the whole thing in butcher paper. Removing the chunks is a sticky mess.

wrapping chunks of salmon in these,

Why ?

I guess it’s a store-wide conversion from regular plastic. They used to use smaller plastic bags, which were easy to work with.

Maybe I can donate my supply.

At my apartment, there’s a garbage chute, with 3 buttons: garbage, food waste and recycling.

I use those bags. They line the compost bin in the kitchen, and then I take the whole bin outside and move the bag straight into the backyard bin.
