Supermarket Pet Peeves

Gribenes are definitely a chef’s treat in my house too

That’s how I look at lamb, too. That fat is gold to me.

Maybe I’m just naturally cynical, but I kind of assumed all retailers did this in one form or another.

From that article you linked:

"It’s not the first time the grocery retailer has been accused of overcharging or deliberately misleading its customers. In 2014, Safeway agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle a lawsuit filed in Marin County alleging that it charged higher prices than advertised, misrepresented the weights of products and falsely claimed that produce from other countries was "locally grown.”

And last month, Safeway agreed to pay $107 million to settle another class action lawsuit filed in Oregon in 2016. That suit alleged customers had been duped on similar BOGO deals on boneless pork chops. Also in May, the company said it would pay an additional $8.75 million in yet another settlement for improperly charging Portland shoppers a 1% clean energy surcharge on non-grocery items. Customers were eligible to make a claim to receive up to $200 in the settlement."

So based on this, they have to pay out $118M in lawsuit fees. I do wonder if these BOGO upcharges come anywhere near that figure in additional income.

I saw a woman stick her hand in the Whole Foods bulk bin to feel the rice. I yelled at her myself.

Yikes.

ICK! All of our grocery stores have done away with the self serve bulk items. Marketing or a sign of life after covid?

A couple years ago someone released a video taken from one of the nicest stores in the area - footage was taken of multiple rats near the bulk bins. Yuck. :rat: people’s hands, almost as bad.

I reported seeing a mouse in my corner carriage trade super. Response, “Oh, yeh, they own the place!”

Whole Foods pulled them during COVID, ditto the olive bar. The latter has returned, I don’t think the former has. Which is a shame, because I very much like being able to buy a small amount of rice, nuts or quinoa.

I think it’s Covid. Chain groceries around here haven’t gone back to salad bars, either. Prepacked containers only.

Or play the release handle like a pin-ball machine to get more walnuts in your muesli.

Yeah, truly rats and cockroaches rule the planet. Would think the rodent/insect abatement protocols would mitigate their high profile appearances though, lol.

Whole Foods brought theirs back, as did Wegmans, I believe (but I rarely use the food court at Wegmans, so not 100% certain of that).

Here, Wegmans hasn’t but Whole Foods has.
