Supermarket Pet Peeves

A few days ago I went to a Safeway I don’t usually frequent. In my always failed attempt to size ul the fastest line, I end up behind a couple who are trying to use expired coupons. The couple gets the checker to look them up on line, and lo and behold; still expired! Then they get her to go look for a paper copy of the circular either the coupons. While gone, the women tells me she is going to be awhile, and that I might want to get on a different line. I should have known better, bit I did. I end up behind a couple who seem to be moving along at a decent clip, only for them to whip out coupons AFTER getting the check book out , AFTER being rung up, and acknowledging that some of the coupons were for things they didn’t buy!

:zipper_mouth_face:

Expired coupon couple are done first.

On the other hand, shout out to the shoppers, employers and employees at my local Lucky Supermarket, and Nugget markets that are very not frustrating. They are perfect for me, for different reasons, and I’m thinking that Safeway must be good for the folks that usually shop there. Now that I think about it,there could be a Pharmacy Pet Peeve thread as well. But not on Hungry Onion.

Nice to have choices.

Wegmans has it - and I  LOVE it! (just getting around to reading this thread now, so sorry for the late reply!)

Along these lines - putting the coin change on TOP of the paper bills and handing it to me that way with the receipt on top of everything. NO. Hand me the coin change and let me drop it into my wallet’s change compartment, THEN hand me the paper money. Oh - and please put the damn receipt in one of the bags! Otherwise, you’ll usually have to wait for me to put the coins away, then the bills, and THEN I’ll slide the cart out of the checkout, dropping the receipt in the bag.

My family thinks I’m weird, but I love checking out supermarkets in other areas of the U.S. and when I’ve traveled abroad (not often on the latter part). So you’re in good company, @PHREDDY.

I thought I was the only one! I hate that. Receipt on the bottom then bills and change on top. No way to put that in your wallet without putting the whole thing down or dropping it.

Why are the chips and crackers on OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE STORE? Why does that lady stop right in the middle of the aisle, oblivious to traffic stacking up behind her? Why is that kid screaming and no one seems to care? Why does that person wait until all the groceries are checked and bagged before beginning the long slow rummage in the giant bag for the elusive checkbook, then start looking for a pen, then, kill me now, take a ridiculous amount of time to fill it out?

This makes me crazy. There is no way to deal with putting the money away efficiently. It makes me wonder if the cashier has ever used cash in their life. This is part of the reason I tend to use plastic for almost everything.

I used to run a cash register in analog days and so I still count out change hoping my return will be an even amount, or in other words, no pennies. But any clerk younger than 40 or so never has any idea what I’m doing. The digital register tells them the amount to pay and return and these folks can’t do simple math in their heads.
I’ve given up.

I just stuff the coins and bills in my pocket and deal with them later. No matter how they hand the money back, someone will take forever to put it away.

The wallet is out of back pocket and ready for the Bill’s in return . All of the change goes into the front pocket of my pants . Then change goes into the box above the dryer . It must way 20 lbs now .

Me too! I always look for a supermarket when I can in foreign countries, because I’m fascinated by the goods they have available.

And on the subject of the plastic bag ban … paper bags are not banned . Some markets are offering free paper bags, but most are offering bags for purchase.

Makes me crazy too plus they way that they start ringing up the next person before I’ve even had a chance to move. I have taken to going to the cart storage area (taking care that I’m not in anyone’s way) to put my change back in my wallet.

Just had this occur with me yesterday. Requested my chips bagged in paper. No problem at checkout.

Our paper bags cost .10 cents. Plastic is banned. Works great.
My secret stash is because people buy the reusable bags and then proceed to donate them to Goodwill. They then use them for their bags and I end up with a variety of cool hauling devices.

“Foreign countries” yes; U.S. no. No good surprises yet. I did check out boiled peanuts in N.C. but it was not a good surpirise.

If you are the next person, I bet NOT doing that is the pet peeve. I seem to move away as quickly as I can at the grocery store, pharmacy, bank, whatever, THEN get my self situated the way I like.

Hope that wasn’t too obnoxious. I think different p!aces are attractive for diffent reasons.

Not affording the person in front of you literally (and yes, the actual meaning of the term) 20 seconds is irritating.

I can see that, and I am in total agreement.
