suggestions for restaurants in the lake como and lake regions of italy

Hi! Thinking of going to Lake Como in early September. Has anyone been recently (within the last year)? Any thoughts & tips on towns/villages, restaurants, places to see, crowds? Thanks.

A bit off the beaten path, but Crotto Del Sergente is a favorite of ours.

I’ve always wanted to visit one of the crotti restaurants:

Off the beaten path is cool with us. Looks good! Thanks.

If you go, make sure to get whatever ravioli they have on the menu. It never fails to disappoint.

The place I remember liking very much was LA FAGURIDA, above Tremezzo; they had a sign outside saying ā€œwe do not serve pasta!ā€

But their polenta with mushrooms is a dish I remember to this day:

Outside the town of Bellagio, but walkable, is SILVIO which was then a sliwFood pick but no idea if it is still in their guide. It was really good, family-owned hotel restaurant with pretty lake view.

There’s a big distinction in those parts between ā€œlakeā€ food and ā€œmountainā€ food, but I guess that’s true of anywhere in Italy that has water nearby.. The crotti, , and LA FAGURIDA, would offer ā€œmountainā€ food…I guess I really liked the polenta and mushrooms there…,.,.2008!

SILVIO offers lake food, like the famous missoltini:

That pretty much sums up any worthwhile restaurant in that area.

Great looking meal.

Hi! Has anyone been to Varenna on Lake Como? It’s supposed to be less touristy, but it does have a small regional train station. Thinking of doing 1–2 days in Tremezzo, then heading to Varenna for the rest of the stay, with day trips to Bellagio, etc. Thanks!

I was there, but in 2018.

At least that’s what these photos say! It is a beautiful area!

More from that trip.

You can take the ferry from Varenna to Bellagio. The good thing about staying on that side of the Lake is that there is the train that goes up and down that coast, so if you don’t have a car, it’s a good bet.

Easily the best meal I had in the area was lunch at Ristorante Il Giardinetto in Mandello del Lario (you can take that regional train from Varenna). I’m guessing dinner would be good too, but it’s a magical spot at lunchtime, imo.

There were other restaurants on the other (far side) of the lake that I really wanted to try but could not figure out how to get to. For example, Locanda La Tirlindana. I was there in August of 2022.

Thanks @ninkat. Photos look great.

Haha I probably shouldn’t have put such a strict timeline (within the last year). I’ll take any advice and recs.

Whoa @shrinkrap this place looks incredible. Would you mind giving me the name of your hotel please?

Eta: oops, should have read the whole thread, I see you answered this.
