I sometimes macerate with just a sprinkle of sugar. Add a scoop of good vanilla ice cream, green peppercorns, and a drizzle of thick balsamic on top.

Where do your strawberries originate from?
We get them in Oregon most of the year between Mexico, California, and here.

Good point about where the strawberries were grown. I notice in the off season I see some grown in Florida.

I think strawberries have gotten weird, watery and inconsistent because the extended or artificially long season. due to being a big cash crop. Use to be you’d get strawberries from mid-April to June in California. Now you see them nearly year round, and from places that traditionally don’t grow strawberries. Asparagus is similar, now has lots of Mexican imports.

Even California strawberries you see until the end of summer into Sept. Ideally you want cool coastal A.M. weather, overcast and warm afternoons….coastal California, Monterey and Ventura. or Oregon, I guess kind of like some grapes. Orange County use to have a fairly big strawberry industry but real estate became too valuable. Best might be from Ventura now, but only in the traditional season, maybe through July.

I think the lack of heat units in August and September results in the lesser berries. Our local garden centre up here in Ontario now grows strawberries until October, thanks to some new everbearing varieties, but they don’t taste as good as June berries.

Florida strawberries are in season roughiy Christmas to Easter…for a short time in late January/early Feb, they’re the only harvest in the US.

This years berries were good if you were local…sadly, they just don’t seem to travel well.

CA, FL, NJ and Mexico. Had trouble with every grower at some point. Not a great season. Pd $2.99-$7.99/lb and organics were horribly mushy.
