Stonebridge, Milford CT. serves hearty American fare

Stayed on the shore in Milford, CT. for a few days and while there we were taken to Stonebridge Restaurant in the downtown area for a hearty birthday lunch celebration. It’s a big multi-sectioned restaurant with a capacity weigh-in at 695. I heard they do a very spirited business evenings inside and out.
Anyway, we got a nice comfortable table for 4 in the main dining room near the bar/lounge and it was unrushed. For the first round we ordered: Colossal Crab Cocktail, large chunks of blue crab served with both a Dijon mustard and spicy cocktail sauce. A few cups of New England Clam Chowder, and a bowl of their Mussels Scampi served with pieces of toasted Italian bread for scooping up the sauce. Each hit the spot. The chowder was right on. The crab was a real treat for its size. And, the mussels made for a dripping feast all around.
For mains: Gilbertie’s Herb Farm Salad with chicken (Gilbertie’s is the popular garden and nursery in Westport); Fish & Chips with a large piece of fried Atlantic Cod filet and hand cut fries, tartar sauce, of course, served with a delicious Green Goddess cole slaw. And for my family friend ‘the big eater’ who once lived in Annapolis and attended UM, a double Soft Shell Crab Sandwich with the works. ( He requested a second large fried crab on top). He made a ‘Dagwood’ out of it and the house happily complied. Once again, the dishes hit the mark.
Be warned: portions here can be very generous! Service was friendly and efficient.
