Southeast Impression in Fairfax - Report

I truly believe and trust the folks I know who like Southeast Impression. It not only has the stamp of approval form the food media, but it is consistently booked every evening. It has hit on a successful formula of upscale Thai and Malaysian dishes.

But if I judge only on the two dishes I had, it was a bad meal.

First up was the Thai Mackerel Salad. Mackerel is an item I can’t avoid. Resistance is futile. However, not much mackerel shows up in this salad, so maybe it was avoiding me. Aside from a few paltry flecks, it turns out to be a limp noodle salad with a lot of lettuce. And it was too sweet. This is a fail.

I was hoping the meal would be redeemed bu the Malaysian Pork Rib Soup. But my problem was that I was expecting some flavor. Silly me. Adding the accompanying soy sauce and chilies did not make the soup richer. I would rather it start off with flavor from the pork. It had more of a thin mushroom flavor.

I know I probably ordered wrong. But that’s not entirely on me. They could make the menu smaller by doing everyone a favor and eliminating these two dishes.
