SoHoMei [San Francisco, Outer Sunset]

I had dinner at SoHoMei today, a Chaozhou/Teochew/Chiuchow restaurant in the Outer Sunset. There’s not that many restaurants specializing in this cuisine in the city.

I had the Chao Zhou Pan Fried Oyster Cake ($17), which is a Chaozhou style oyster omelette, nicely fried and crispy with nice crispy edges, with a good amount of oysters. The batter has sweet potato starch in it, which gives it a pleasantly chewy texture in parts. It was topped with cilantro and served with fish sauce with a large amount of ground white pepper. This was delicious. It had a nice mix of the crispy omelette, the chewy center parts, and the plump oysters. For the best taste consume immediately while the omelette is still crispy.

I also had a Beef Shantou Steamed Rice Roll ($9.95) which was a bit different than a Cantonese dim sum cheung fun. It was shaped similarly with a thin rice crepe, but had a different, less dense beef filling and also tomatoes, bean sprouts, and iceberg lettuce. It was topped with finely chopped preserved mustard greens and cilantro. The sauce was a bit less strongly seasoned than the one that comes with Cantonese rice noodle rolls. This was my first time trying the Chaozhou style rice roll. It was good.

I also had a Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($3.95).

I ordered a little too much - both dishes were quite substantial. I will be back to try some more Chaozhou dishes.

I was happy to try this version of a rice roll when they first opened, but I just found it a tad too plain for my tastes. The inclusion of iceberg lettuce gives a hint as to the flavor profile. I am curious about their oyster pancake though.

Yeah the lettuce and tomato and sprouts do give it a lighter flavor, and also the lighter beef filling. The oyster pancake is definitely worth trying.
