We’re checking out the Monet and Oliver Jeffers exhibits at the Brooklyn Museum of Art this weekend. I’m super excited - we haven’t been to this area in a while and it looks like there are some solid lunch, snack, and treat options. We’ll be arriving around 11 and want to see how long the Radio Bakery line is, check out the farmers’ market at Grand Army Plaza, and maybe grab some egg custard tarts at Lisbonata. The Trinidadian/Chinese place near Lisbonata caught my eye too. We have a late lunch reservation at Ozakaya after the museum and would like some dessert afterwards - Good Batch looks good for ice cream sandwiches but it’s a bit of a walk, and I’m not a huge Ample Hills fan (which is closer). We’ll probably only get to half of these places but I like to have options up my sleeve. Any other snacky/dessert recommendations nearby? I’d love a good Jamaican beef patty to take home. Thanks in advance!
A few blocks north of Trinidad Golden Palace, Island Pops might catch your eye, too.
I ate the Lisbonata output when they were still selling the the farmers markets last year, and they were very very good. Id buy some of those and save them for your dessert options. You will be down by Vanderbilt then. I agree on Ample Hills, its offerings seem rather childish and too sweet to me., there is a Van Leewen toward Atlantic Ave on Vanderbilt that might be more to your taste (or not), not aware of other, better options at the moment. Heading toward the City., Sofreh Cafe, the persian teashop on Flatbush Ave near Bergen Street 2,3 station may be the closest place to Ozakaya that I would recommend for desserts though there are a couple of shops right there on Vanderbilt that might appeal - Sofreh has some items that are exquisite and you can sit down for tea or other drinks there. If you are still up for more walking, there are a couple of places in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill with delightful pastries, Im thinking of Otway and Smor. Patties are offered at Trinidad Golden Palace and also Little Miss Muffin on Washington, probably better than Golden Krust. The GAP Farmers Market is at its best in the morning, they are winding up by 2 or so, be aware. I dont have any info on Radio Bakery its not been on my radar so no comment on that; it might be better than the Vandy options, Dough, Millefeuille, and Little Cupcake.
Have a great day in the neighborhood and it would be great to hear how you do!
Are you taking the subway or driving?
We are driving in.
Bigger radius of choice!
Oh my gosh this looks amazing!!
Wow Sofreh cafe looks AMAZING also!! Happy to hear Lisbonata is good - we will definitely be stopping there. And Island pops too??? ![]()
Wow there is a real abundance of options. Can’t wait - will report back!
true but parking in this area truly sucks, especially due to anti-car activists successfully lobbying to remove it. I do not give up a parking space willingly since I may not find another easily.. Maybe could drive over to Fulton Street - I think there are meters there. There are also some meters on Plaza Street which goes around Grand Army Plaza, as well as other commercial streets, but they are only good for a limited time. And there is (pay) parking behind the museum if a legal free parking space cannot be found.
it is amazing, but note their sweets are not super sweet by American standards.
Good - because as you note that’s one of the reasons I dislike Ample Hills! Thanks for all the intel!
you are unlikely to find parking near Sofreh Cafe either, but there are buses running through the area andthe 2,3 subway lines connect stop at Franklin Ave, Eastern Parkway (for the museum and botanic garden), GAP and Bergen St. if you want to leave your car by the museum, say.
Let me know what you think. I had dinner there last night (the Ozakaya don, a special) and was not terribly impressed. The fish seemed to have been mixed together in advance, resulting in a muddy taste.
Thanks for the heads up - maybe we will avoid that dish?? It seemed like a decent option for our 7 year old sushi obsessed kid based on reviews - almost certain it’ll be better than our last sushi dinner in Westchester (Hajime in Harrison, which was recommended widely, but couldn’t compare to the least exceptional sushi meal I’ve had in the city). Will report back…
Maybe stick with nigiri or chirashi? The place is wildly popular - we got there at 5:15 and it was packed by 6:00 - so I might just be setting an unreasonably high bar.
Haha got it and our bar is lower because sushi options are so limited in Westchester so hopefully it’ll work out ![]()
Will post more later but here are a few photos of our adventures today! (Not pictured - beef and chicken patties from Miss Muffin and her Stuffin, which were inhaled too fast to photograph)
your pix are great! looking forward to hearing more about how it all went.
