Probably inspired by the likes of pineapple chicken, which I have seen on a menu.
Yeah, the comment on Facebook elaborates a bit on the “Chinese influence” — basically combining sweet and savory ingredients. Not sure that’s limited to Chinese, but perhaps in the early 60s that rang true in Canada for a Greek immigrant.
I just think it’s a great story, and such a fab example of food evolution.

When I was at our Safeway store earlier there was quite a line for the seasonal flavor. I won’t mention it specifically.
