Excellent dinner with a Nanjing resident and one of the wife’s best friends from Kaohsiung. English name is Nanjing Impressions, Nanjing Dai Pai Dong in Chinese.

A bright convivial space ringed with stalls and filled with happy eaters, hence the Dai Pai Dong moniker.

The tasty authentic food belied the thematic setting. It’s great to dine with more friends, we can order and try more dishes!!!

Shizitou. Lions Head Meatballs, Doufu mixed in contributes to the soft mouth feel.

Shao Mai with Purple Rice. Also known as Black or Forbidden Rice.

Shanghai Crab Roe Doufu with Salted Duck Egg. A luxurious umami loaded dish.

Mung Bean Curd Noodles in a light vinegary soy dressing.

Lo Mai Guy with Pork Belly. An upscale take on an everyday dim sum classic.

Mala steamed Whole Fish. Spicy clean flavors, love the Sichuan Peppercorns and Chopped Chile. Good amount of heat, as requested.

Shanghai Bak Choy with Shitake.

Wok fried Seasonal Vegetables with Doufu Skin threads.

Chopped Dou Miu (pea sprouts?) with Peanuts.

Glass Noodles with Dried Fried Doufu, Coriander, Duck Blood and Duck Intestine. A very traditional Nanjing dish. The best glass noodles I’ve had, great flavorful chew on the Vermicelli.

Chinese Yam Congee. Finished the meal with this slightly sweet congee.

2 bottles of 2020 Maison Jean Loron Gamay Noir enhanced the comradery and flow of conversation. A great evening of food and friends.

Looks a lot fancier than what’s calkdd a dai pai Dong in HK!

Interesting.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen diou miou prepared that way.

Yeah, the Chinese characters literally translates to Dai Pai Dong.

May seem fancier, but prices MUCH more reasonable than today’s HK DPD!!!

Following in USD.

The veggie plates ranged from $1.50 ~ $3.00
New Mai Guy with Pork Belly: $5.00
Fish (was actually half): $12.00

Ain’t seen those prices in HK in 20+ years. This at a fancier place. Prices at regular joints are almost ridiculously affordable!!!

Just ducked into an air conditioned coffee shop. Owner graciously encouraged us to freely enjoy our takeout from the day market.

Quarter Roast Duck (delicious!!!): $2.00

Fresh Fried Fish: $3.25

I was taking a stab. It’s actually:

馬蘭頭

Indian Aster. Not familiar at all.

Oh, even more interesting.

How was it? How did it taste?

My Taiwan born (Shanghainese stock) wife says her mom cooked this regularly in Taiwan.

Tastes slightly pungent, a bit like spinach. A little crunchy.

Well, I’m guessing it’s like we have a Singaporean “hawker” center in New York that’s a high end indoor food court :joy:

(Dai pai dong from what I read before my HK trip were licensed open-air street food stalls in HK that are almost gone at this point, but the term was also adopted elsewhere.)

I tried not to think too hard about pricing comparisons given ppp is different everywhere (as I noted elsewhere yesterday, I paid $1 for a glass of sugarcane juice in Mumbai yesterday, which cost me $10 in CA last month )

Yikes!!!

I paid 25RMB last week, ~ $3.53.

That was on Nanjing Road in Shanghai. Gotta play tourist now and again.

I was surprised that many things in HK were similarly priced to nyc (dim sum at nicer places, for eg).

But then others were a lot cheaper (eg condiments at the grocery store).

Ma lan tou cooked properly is fantastic. The only problem is it’s hard to get a hold of the veg in the US, they will freeze the ones from Jiangnan and export to the US.
