Shanghai ‘24 - Hangzou: West Lake

A delightful walk along the famous historic West Lake this evening. A pleasant park with myriad scenic paths and bridges urging full enjoyment of this beautiful lake. The beautiful and tasty Lotus plant abound and is especially revered in this region.

I was quite taken by the lovely lotus flowers and seed pods at the day market this morning. I’ve enjoyed raw lotus seeds before and it’s fun popping them from the pods and popping them into my mouth.

Even in the dark, the lotus plants inhabiting West Lake were luxurious and enjoyable.

Hangzou is the origin of the Grandma’s Home chain. We were happy to stop in at the end of the trail, lakeside. Their rooftop patio had just closed for the evening, we gladly settled into a comfortable booth and consoled ourselves with a Chinese brew, or three.

We started with West Lake soup, the gateway to the great meal to follow!

Beef, Cilantro, Mushrooms, Tomato and Egg White in a thickened broth. Very nice.

Lotus Root, of course. Stuffed with Sweet Rice.

Tiny Osmanthus Petal sprinkles a subtle elegant touch.

More of the area’s fabulous Shrimp, quick light stir fried with minimal seasoning. Vinegar dipping sauce as needed.

Snow Fish with Chili Pepper. White Fish Flakes in a peppercorn prep cooked with Cucumber. Well balanced, the sweet fish not overwhelmed by the Sichuan peppercorns.

We took some of the sauce to take back. We have some Goat meat in fridge that will benefit from this delicious sauce.

Continue to be impressed with the vegetable cooking here. Chinese Yam, Mushroom, Snow Peas, Carrots, Broccoli and Wood Ears. Simply quick wok’d and seasoned with a delicate hand.

This is only our second visit to Grandma’s, first time was in Guangzhou. Solid two for two, we’ll be back.

The large amount of restaurant chains in China wasn’t on my radar until recently when I read about more of those opening in Hong Kong. Just checked, but Grandma’s home doesn’t seem to be in HK, but they are in New York! Hopefully soon in more places around the world, judging from your perception of the quality of their food.

Isn’t that where the West Lake restaurant is? “The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World.”

That West Lake restaurant is in Changsha in Hunan Province. Seats over 5,000. That’s a lot of covers.

According to Google.

My first Grandma’s Home experience was actually in Xiamen, not Guangzhou.

That was fun!!

Brain and Tofu? Yum!!

Pot Stickers finished with egg? Genius!!

I was surprised by the reverence for lotuses when I went to the Lantau giant Buddha.

They had buckets lining the entire place with different varieties of lotuses, and small lotus ponds along the way to the monastery.

Didn’t spot lotus root or seeds on the menu, but I didn’t eat inside the restaurant, only at the takeaway.

Beautiful!!!

I want some to personalize and brighten up our hotel rooms!!! They’ll bring a smile every time I glance at them.

Aching to get back to HK. I’m happy you experienced her for the first time. The excitement of exploring and eating a new place is such a great feeling!!!

Lotuses are revered in Indian (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain) culture as well, so it should not have been a surprise to me as it must have traveled with Buddhism.

It was indeed exhilarating to be exploring a new place after so long :two_hearts:

Lotus flowers carry great spiritual significance in Buddhism and Hinduism.

In West Bengal in India, 108 lotus flowers must be included in the worship of the Goddess Durga on the 8th day of her festival.

Vietnam also reveres the lotus flower as a national symbol of beauty and purity arising from darkness, as the lotus is an astonishingly beautiful flower that grows from the murky mud.

The Indian name Pankaj literally means ‘born from the mud’ but denotes the lotus.

The first 2 flowers are actually water lilies. Even I have a tendency to misidentify them. They’re all beautiful, though.

We had a fun nosh at a cute Lotus forward shop.

Very nice sampler set.

French fried Lotus. Tempura style Lotus Lollipop.

Lotus Juice. Very refreshing, we bought a full bottle to take back.

All added to our appreciation of the lovely Lotus plant.
