Shanghai ‘24 Hangzhou, along the Quintang River

Didi’d (Uber of China) from Shanghai to Hangzhou on Monday. Hangzou is 105 miles southwest of Shanghai.

We took a short staycation from our vacation. In Shanghai, we averaged 14k steps per day, in over 90° temperatures. We’d earned a respite to relax, take it easy and recharge. We took full advantage of our hotel Club Lounge membership and put on the golden handcuffs for a day.

Thus enervated, we hopped on a boat to traverse The Grand Canal of China.

For the princely sum of 3rmb (~usd$0.45) we saw some beautiful scenery and glimpsed some locals enjoying their day.

Fishing, napping and playing Mah Jong in the relative coolness under the bridge. Life is good!!

We disembarked after a 45 minute ride. A pleasant walkabout to soak in the local sights and sounds. In Kyoto, Ladies (some gentlemen) dressed up in kimonos, Hanboks in S. Korea are de rigueur for the Chinese visitor.

Well, even back home in China, they do the same.

I can’t recall the last time I saw a pop off beverage tab.

Dumplings for dinner. Freshly handmade.

Pork and Bamboo Siu Mai.

Shrimp and Pork Dumplings.

Hom Dan (salted egg) Yolk and Meat Dumplings. Very nice!! The grainy saltiness of the egg made for a nice flavor combo.

Some forgettable Duck Kidneys, out the door for about usd$8.00.

Just about the cost of our Didi back to our hotel.

Curious, why not the high speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou?

RMB 800. Door Indigo Bund to door Intercontinental Hangzou. In a China EV equivalent to a Tesla S. Courteous driver in tie and pressed shirt in air conditioned comfort.

Too old to be dragging our luggage to taxi/train station/taxi dealing with the queues. May consider HSR in cooler weather.

In this weather, Didi all the way!!!

Crazy to me how many Teslas there were in HK!

A few years ago, there was a tremendous import tax break on Tesla’s. I was so impressed that my Uber picked me up in a Tesla.

Now, as you say, they’re all over. China made Tesla are all over Shanghai, Hangzou and probably most major 1st and 2nd tier cities

Local made EV’s are quickly taking over though. Just got out of this one that we Didi’d to Nanjing.

I recalled this conversation AFTER we bought the HSR ticket from Suzhou to Hangzhou. It’d be much more convenient for us to call a car, and not have to lug the luggage to and from the train station, and take the HSR from SZ first to Shanghai, then to Hangzhou. (they got no direct train).

Next time.

Mainland China has become a favored destination for many reasons.

Ease of transit inter and intra cities by Didi is definitely one of the major pluses. So nice to be picked up at the hotel in an immaculate air conditioned auto chauffered by a courteous and polite driver. The cost is about the same or sometimes cheaper if you add up taxi to/from train station, train fare, etc…

We’ve already booked Shanghai again for November. Hangzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai proper.

Which category of cars do you pick though? I have found that the Didi usually have the better quality cars amongst all the car operators available in Amap, but even Didi has a pretty wide range of quality. The last thing I want to happen is to be stuck in a heavily perfumed car intended to cover other smells, for two plus hours.

I was also told that there are Wechat groups for routes between major cities, such as Suzhou-Hangzhou, where drivers taking passengers one way try to find potential customers in those groups so they don’t have to drive an empty car back.

I think a good criteria to take cars vs HSR would be:

  1. 2-4 passengers
  2. trip length < 1.5 hours on HSR.
  3. HSR station on the outskirts of town.

Definitely stop by for a meal at Definitely Fresh in Hangzhou. One of the best meals we had during the entire trip. I will write about it later.

We don’t always pick the highest level, but the premium level is an affordable luxury that we indulge in.

Pickup from hotel Shanghai to Hotel Hangzhou, door to door. Rate as of a few minutes ago.

RMB$870 = USD$120

  • drivers must be in collared shirt and tie
  • cars cannot be over 5 years old. No dents, no rips in interior, freshly washed. NO SMELLS!!
  • complimentary bottled water
  • front passenger seat must be fully pulled forward, seatsbacks down
  • no unneccessary conversation from driver, rear view mirror must be averted to protect our privacy
  • USB charger ports and charge cables readily accessible
  • boxed tissue on hand
  • air conditioning set at your preferred comfort level

Pay for the more expensive option, and the driver will find you at airport and walk you to the car.

Hong Kong to Zhuhai, door to door. Hong Kong customs clearance from car, no need to exit.

China entry, driver drops you off and picks you up at the customs office. Seamless.

RMB$1,200 = USD$167

Guanzhou to Hong Kong hotel. RMB$1,700 = USD$238

Roomy vehicle with passenger seating for 2 pax. Plenty of leg room. Customs clearance a breeze.

I’d say DiDi for shorter rides are about half or less that of UBER in SF, but in a premium auto.

Oh yeah, cars are GPS tracked by HQ. If any deviations from the optimum route, the driver gets a call to explain why. Complete safety measures.
