My SIL sent me a video of an Italian baker making sfogliatelle, and now I want one! Are there any bakeries in the SF Bay Area that make them? I told him I’d try to track some down. Has anyone been to Gran Milan in Richmond? Sounds promising!
The video is in Italian, but there’s a voiceover in English. Thanks.
La Biscotteria on RWC
Shfooyadel!
Dianda’s Italian-American Pastry in the Mission and in San Mateo. I’m sure at least one of the North Beach bakeries has as well.
Now, anyone know where I can get sfingi for St. Joseph’s Day on Thursday?
Just came back from Gran Milan in Richmond. Let’s just say it’s good that it isn’t closer! We got three mini sfogliatelle, two zeppoles (strawberry and cherry), and two olive sticks. Haven’t tried the sticks yet, but the others were fantastic. Got some for the SIL who inspired this quest. It’s a little pricey but people were super nice, and I’m looking forward to trying other things. I’m totally ignorant of Italian pastries, so I’m planning to do some research.

Lunardis in San Jose, Meridan Ave used to sell them.
This was a chowhound topic in the old days.
I think last year or the year before there was some article somewhere describing that Sociale in Presidio Heights had it in their dessert menu. You might have to give them a call
Once my daughter ordered frozen from Gold Belly, from Ferrara in NYC. I love them from Modern in Boston.
Thanks, but I was looking more along bakery lines. In my old neighborhood in Queens, there was a bakery close to me that had both custard-filled and cannoli cream-filled versions.
I would give Gran Milan a call.
Today’s St. Joseph’s Day, not tomorrow, and I found them this morning at both Stella and Victoria Pastry in North Beach. I got them from Stella because those looked a lot nicer.
I just went to La Biscotteria for the first time two days ago, on a (sadly, unsuccessful) mission to find some Zeppole di San Giuseppe. We did take home a couple of cannoli and sfogliatelle, and both were excellent! The owners are from the Naples area, so they should know their sfogliatelle. They also have cuccidati and struffoli listed on their website as “Christmas Specials”, two items that I’ve never seen outside of my Grandma’s kitchen. They told me they used to make Zeppole di San Giuseppe, but they didn’t sell well because few people around here are familiar with them.
They’re on El Camino in Redwood City. Check the hours before you go. Closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, open very early (baker’s hours?) on other days. Ring the doorbell to get into the store.
La Biscotteria is really a special small place which flies a bit (too much) under the radar. I hope you also took the opportunity to grab some good tacos close by, e.g. Los Carnalitos
Lunardi’s in Walnut Creek! Stella in North Beach. I used to find them frozen to bake at home at The Market at Edgewood in Palo Alto but it’s been a few years so I don’t know if they still sell them.
