SFGate reports on a trend away from smashburgers to the more traditional thick and juicy versions. But the story features higher-end restaurants, especially RT Bistro. Will this trickle down to more affordable places?

I had a cheeseburger from Beep’s late yesterday night, @brisket44 style with Cheddar and jalapeños. The pickled jalapeños were nice with the burger and added some heat and acidity.
Shake Shack opened in downtown Berkeley (University at Oxford). My burger was unexpectedly good, juicy and thick. A little pricey at $10 for a single patty.
Smish Smash, smash burger place in Saluhall, on Market Street, SF.
I’m late to the smash burger craze and think this might be my first one. I got the special Dac Biet burger. It was good, but maybe I should have gotten the OG, because alfalfa sprouts do not belong on a burger. I found myself folding the crispy overhang into the burger. It was fine, but think I’m just not a smash burger type of person. The shoestring fries in beef tallow, however, were excellent.
They were doing a free “drag bingo Sunday brunch” in the food hall, giving away totes, water bottles, etc., which the tourists really enjoyed and lined up to get pictures with the drag queens. I think it’s a city program trying to get more people downtown. The hall itself had a lot of vacant/coming soon spaces. It’s a nice big space to eat with lots of tables or if you need to meet someoene downtown.
Stopped over at ONE65 Patisserie for a really good chocolate pistachio croissant. They have pastries, chocolates and some interesting ice cream and ice cream pops, so lots of different sweets to try of you are in the area and your sweet tooth is itching.
