I went there on opening week which was last week. There was a line out the door when I arrived but it was gone when I left. I got a seat in the small counter. There’s not much seating in there. You order at the counter and get a number. A circuit breaker got tripped a few times and I think they turned off the fryer afterwards, so I didn’t get the fries. I did get a double “Oklahoma” though - a smash burger that is cooked on top of onions. It was a good burger. The patties had a nice sear with still a bit of pink inside. You can see them put the balls of beef on the grill and smash them down. The onions were nice and sweet, and there was also some pickled pepper I think in there which may not be traditional but added some nice acidity. Pickles were on the side. The bun was soft and buttered.
I had a burger at the Vault Garden in SF FiDi today. It was good. There were two patties and it was quite substantial in terms of meat. The patties were cooked to around medium and each one was topped with melty Cheddar cheese. The bun was brioche-like I think. $21 including fries. It had simple accoutrements - only a little bit of lettuce, onion, and “secret sauce,” with some pickled cucumber on the side. This made for a burger that was very manageable to eat which is a plus for me. There was also ketchup and aioli to dip the fries in (the fries were good too) and also to apply to your burger.
OH G Burgers is at the top of Solano in Berkeley. They have a variety of specialty burgers, in the $20 range, but I tried a plain cheeseburger. Meh, sorry to say. I just don’t understand smash burgers–to me it was just overcooked and didn’t have much flavor.
It lived up to its lofty reputation. I got a 1/4 lb burger with American cheese ($10.20 w/cheese) which comes with lettuce, tomato, and Beep’s sauce which is a bit like Thousand Island. Pickles and onions are optional. The burger had a really nice crust on it and was cooked medium well with still a bit of pink. The bun was nice and fluffy. Just a classic American burger.
I also had an order of garlic fries ($6.25) which were good but got a little soggy. I would probably get the regular fries or try the onion rings next time. They are takeout only, with a counter and a table outside.
Love Beep’s! I usually add pickled jalapeños. The half pounder is just two quarter lb patties and doesn’t seem as balanced as the classic 1/4 lb Beep’s Burger. I always get the onion rings, none of their fries (I think they have 3-4 styles) are anything special.
Good tips! Pickled jalapeños do sound good. I agree w/the double patty seeming excessive - the single 1/4 lb patty seemed like it was perfectly in proportion with the bun and toppings.
The milkshakes did look good. They had one with twinkies!
