I’m a little surprised to see Cotogna on this list. Don’t get me wrong. I love the place. It’s probably my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco. Their pasta is superb!
But somehow their pizza feels like an afterthought to me. As though they had to provide it for any kids dining. It’s just totally underwhelming, like what you might get at a brewpub somewhere outside of a major metropolitan area. The crust especially left a lot to be desired. Fortunately, it was not the main star of our meal. But as a dedicated pizzaphile, I had to give it a whirl, just to satisfy my curiosity.
Just download the app and get on the list. The coupons sometimes last forever, sometimes a month. The last time I forgot I even had $10 off in my account, and it was $10 margherita day or something so I just paid tax and tip.
I went to Cotogna more in the 2010s. Never had the pasta there, but always wanted to. What pasta did you like? Not sure I’ve been back to Cotogna since before 2017. Possibly since before 2016.
I can’t find the dates I went there anymore. If I go back, I’ll have more current pictures and reviews. I did like the focaccia bread there.
I probably went to Cotogna a few times because it was a decent place before going to The Warfield or Bill Graham Civic Center.
Just for completeness, I feel I should link to my post on Pizza Supreme Being
It’s a bit of a trek for strictly “Bay Area” but if you’re looking for a truly great plain slice, this one is hard to top. The post is 3 yars old, but I’ve been recently, and it’s as good as ever.
What kind of location are the other ones? The Palo Alto location is a ghost kitchen location. They probably just make the pies elsewhere, and the Local Kitchen folks just throw it into the oven when the orders come in.
I think they have actual locations (not ghost kitchens) in SF (Soma, North Beach), Oakland and Campbell - everything else are just Local Kitchens ghost kitchens (which based on own experience I would avoid)
Yeah the SF Soma location has seating on one side and basically a pick up counter on the other. I haven’t been to any other location. They do significant take-out business - prepare to be elbowed by the delivery crew when picking up.
Where can I go, near the Louise Davis theater (or a short rideshare away), on a Monday? For next week.
I would have done Cotogna, since I hadn’t been there since the mid 2010s, but they’re closed on Mondays.
I did do Square Pie Guys again last week, after I realized Cotogna was closed on Monday. But I had to leave 1/2 of the pizza behind, because I can’t take outside food into a venue.
One more question. I went to Emilia’s in Berkeley several times in the 2010s. That was when you ordered by phone.
Also, the owner would let me or us sit at one of the small tables there, and eat there.
When I went in 2023, there was an online ordering system now.
And, no eating inside.
Where can I go within 3 minutes walk or less to sit down and eat?
Are there benches or a table somewhere? I think one time in the 2010s, we ate somewhere near the Berkeley Bowl Marketplace. I don’t know remember exactly where, or if it’s still a viable option.
My goal is to find a place quickly and sit down and eat, while it’s still hot.
Thanks. Do you think it’s cool to bring outside food and eat there? I’d be fine ordering a latte from there too. If you like Damask Rose, what do you recommend?
