Retro!

A damp paper towel also works

I try not to use disposable stuff when there’s non-disposable stuff available.

Ok. Damp kitchen towel or sponge cloth then.

Wish I could send a picture. But I have a 100-year or so burr grinder that I’ve used for many things, like garam masala. But for everyday use, I keep whole white peppercorns in it. Just a few grinds as needed (and I wholly endorse fresh-ground white pepper). Thanks! Looks like what @ricepad posted, yes?

I have and enjoy using this one:

Mr. Coffee 12 Cup Electric Coffee… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BRLXUI?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Best features: It has a little sweeper arm that scrapes the ground spices off the sides of the cup when you twist it. And the cup and lid are dishwasher safe.

Thanks! I have a coffee burr grinder, as mentioned upthread. I’m looking for something very compact, because my counter already looks like a clearance rack.

Oops, I replied to the original post without reading the follow-ups. Sorry.

Could you try repurposing one of those disposable glass pepper mills? Rather than having to buy something new. I’m not sure how large pieces of spices they can handle though (maybe not cinnamon and star anise).

A lot of the manual options seem to have a comparable footprint to a coffee grinder. :woman_shrugging:t2:

I know. I am leaning toward a little manual thing. Although that Krups is very pretty.

What about an electric pepper mill? Should be able to grind spices with a smaller footprint.

Indeed, yes. My own is more rustic. I’m sure it’s 100+ years old. Works great presently, probably from not being heavily used for most of the 20C. It was a decorative memento item in the family until 20 years ago, when I got hold of it…

I had an older version of the Krups that you posted and it worked well for many years. It wasn’t so quiet, though this one may be.
For nutmeg and cinnamon I use a microplane rasp grater.

I picked up a heavy metal mortar and pestle at a garage sale, and it works far better than the ceramic ones ever did for me.

I’ve also got a cheap chopper coffee grinder that does ok for things like grinding an Indian grocery quantity of coriander seeds or similar things, with a basic rinse&dry between those and coffee.

I have a mortar and pestle, but it doesn’t grind as evenly as I would like, although I use it to crush fennel seeds and like that. What I want is something like the Cuisinart mini-prep I used to have, except it doesn’t break.

I inherited an old school wood Peugeot pepper grinder, still in excellent shape. Very nice, use it for the table.

Update on my very slow quest. I bought and returned the Krups Silent Vortex Electric Grinder, because the bowl is supposed to lift out for easy cleaning, and it did not.
